the paiute has a VERY sensitive trigger

Hey Md 25v, very nice cordage, spears and gorge hooks. You obviously have been doing this for a while. I have to ask you, though, why is the distance from the top of the vertical stick to the deadfall so great? Don't take this as a critique - I am really curious if you do this for a reason. The only reason I can think of is to put more pressure on the trigger stick.

Oh, and BTW, I do friction fire in my living room :D - seriously!

The top stick is a fulcrum that sets off the trigger stick. The further the point of friction from the weight is from the pivot point on the fulcrum, the more leverage the weight has on the pivot point. Since the trigger becomes "faster" with reduced friction (smooting the surface, etc...) but is also harder to set, increasing the pull against the trigger stick helps to offset a more delicate trigger. I don't know if I said that well enough or if it only makes sense to me, but the best way to really get the picture is to set one with a longer than normal top stick and see how sensitive the extra tention on the trigger stick makes the trap. Try it out and tell me what you think. FWIW I use a long top stick on a paiute deadfall but not on a fig4 deadfall

How does the trap get sprung , Does the prey just knock the trigger stick as it passes by ? Is it not a baited trap ?
