microtech doc fit and finish

I have two DOC's. One requires two hands to unlock while the other has almost no engagement and can be closed without touching the lock bar.

Wow thats just ridiculas! Complete lock failure right from the factory? I think microtech and strider need to hit the drawing board again on this model. Something just isn't right. From all your responses this is just amazing how many lemons are out there. Recall anyone?

i just felt like i was reading about my black dlc- doc. Mine is exactly like yours. The grind is just awful! No way in hell is this acceptable. This makes me angry to no end!! This company is making cash hand over foot and putting out knives that are total garbage. Never!! Would a knife leave my shop like this... & at 310$$ what a joke! Mine is almost impossible for me to flip open & literally twice as hard to close. The clip, of course, plain sucks!! The grind is.... Puke!! When you spend over $300.00 on a knife it should be perfecto right outta the box. You shouldn't have to spend 5 hours on it to fix the p.o.s.
This is unacceptable microtech!

exactly!!!

The clip is just uncomfortable. The end sticks straight up into my hand. But that I can fix myself at the cost of finish.

I also own an ultratec and a combat troodon and both have excelent fit and finish. So the qc issues seems to be model specific or at the least a recent problem.

That is exactly what the LCC would do. If you would grip it hard enough it would break the skin.

Gte217e has taken care of quite a few Microtech blunders over the years. There're a couple similar threads on this by other people where the guy has mediated the repair process, even from people that didn't purchase knives from him.

It's unfortunate that a knife of this price has so many issues for so many people. Mine was perfect out of the box, except that evil pocket clip! Mine was produced on 5/13. Lock up is about 30% and closes easily with one hand.

Now if only STR made Ti clips for it!!

Really sorry to hear you guys have had problems. I have two of the full sized Matrix knives, one production Whaleshark, one custom Whaleshark, one Socom Elite, and a custom DOC in carbon fiber. All of them are rock solid. Sorry to hear of your bad experiences.

Here is my problem, I bought Microtech Select Fire five months ago... it was 280$ with shipping. When I opened the knife for the first time I was more than suprised! The blade had vertical blade play at least 1mm ! and of course I dont have special tool to disassemble the knife to try to fix something...and blade have some wavy scratches on one side...I couldt believe it with my eyes. And it makes no sense to send them the knife because I am from Croatia and the shipping will be probably 40-50$ in one direction... Really doubt I will ever buy microtech again

I'm surprised to hear all of these horror stories. I just received a D.O.C. in trade and am very impressed with it in every aspect. Lock up is solid, fit and finish are stellar, flips smoothly, and I don't even notice the pocket clip when I grip the knife.

Sorry, changing my post because I posted in wrong thread.

My DOC has good fit and finish. The flipper is not as easy to use as I like, but the knife is rock solid, no blade play and a centered blade.

I was just taking a look at a DOC for a possible trade and it looks to me like lock up is 100%. I have read this is common. That is very disappointing considering I have a whaleshark that is near perfect. QC seems to have been completely missed on the DOC. Wonder if is a completely different factory?

Honestly I'd give the dealer a call and re-request an exchange and explain the scenario. IMHO a dealer has the responsibility to examine the product prior to shipping, although not all dealers have that mentality. MT's service has gotten better based on recent reviews, but agree it would be better if you can avoid that route. I've bought about seven their 2014 production and not one complaint, and I'm fairly picky with knives of that price. Please post what progress you're able to make...very interested to hear.

I'm about to receive my third microtech tonight. I hope it doesn't have any of these problems. The DOC I handled was also hard to disengage because of the slippery aluminum with no cutout.

When I first got my blackout DOC I had problems with the knife right out of the box. First, the lockup was so extremely engaged that it made the knife an absolute bear to close and ended up shredding my thumb. I thought it may loosen up after a few hundred opening and closings but it never did. Secondly, the front portion of the blade wasn't as sharp I thought a knife of that price should be.

I ended up sending the knife to microtech for warranty repair and sharpening. They had the knife for roughly 7-8 weeks, when they sent it back the lockup was fixed, easier to operate and the knife was hair shaving sharp. All shipping costs were covered by them. Now at the time there was 1 "department" dedicated to the warranty servicing of the DOC line, I dont know if that wait time has since changed.

Everything aside I love the knife, its a beast, the new pocket clip doesn't bother me in any grip (the old one would have) and it has stayed sharp. I didnt necessarily like the amount of time they had the knife to fix the issues but everything is golden now.

Don't worry, Microtech has some of the worst customer service. At least you know it will be a battle.

And yes, they usually have great F&F. This is sad to hear. But, I won't be buying one anyways because of the clip design.

And about 2 years ago there was talk of a BFC sponsor becoming an "Authorized Microtech Repair Center". I don't remember who it was or if it even happened. You may search BFC and try to find out about it.

I would but I am on my phone and don't have time. Good luck!

I received my first ever Microtech about a week ago. Black and green DOC. At first, it was very stiff out of the box. Flipped with lots of effort, just wasn't that smooth. And the lockbar tension was a bit much. I had ordered the pivot and scale screw bits from Blade HQ, so I was able to loosen the pivot a bit, but then the blade centering was off. So, I tightened up again to center the blade. Blade grind was perfectly symmetrical, and the edge very, very sharp.

I have found, that for some reason, on bearing pivoted knives, the way to smooth them out and make them flip like lighting is to hit the pivot with a heat gun. This made a drastic improvement on the DOC action, even with the pivot tightened back up. It has also worked on my 2 Brous Silent Soldier Flippers, and my Guardian Tactical Helix. Just enough heat, and the blades rocket out of the handle, and almost close on themselves when unlocked. This and using reel oil on the pivot. I use Abu Garcia Reel Oil on mine.

Comparing the DOC to the Guardian Tactical Helix, the Helix wins. Marginally better clip, much lighter knife overall, and after the heat treatment of the pivot - smoother/faster flipping.

Try working them in like how Greg Medford opens and closes his knives. Watch his videos on youtube, when he puts his thumb on the pivot and pulls upwards. If my knife has a sticky lock or whatever it works better after i open and close it like this for a while.

I love my DOC but the lock-up varied and the blade was off center. I used it until I couldn't take it anymore and sent it back. The lady I spoke with was really polite and helpful... For the 4 months that it took to get it back. No big deal though, because it was around the holidays. Then I got the knife back and they LITERALLY never touched it.

I'm not sure what to recommend, but I will say that less than 30 minutes after I got mine back I had it up for trade.
