microtech doc fit and finish

the lock-up varied and the blade was off center...........I got the knife back and they LITERALLY never touched it.........30 minutes after I got mine back I had it up for trade.

I hope this information is shared with anyone you are offering it up to.

Just got a DOC black DLC and it has issues.

Doesn't flip open, flipper is crazy stiff. Like, I have a blister on my finger from trying to flip it. Action is lazy and slow, doesn't lock open.

Next, the locking bar is binding on something, you need two fingers to pull it out of the way to get the blade to close. No way you can do it with your thumb alone.

Super disappointed.

My ZT301 (although assisted) feels and works 1000x better.

I'm trying to get ready for the CS drama and wait that is coming.

Thats very odd. Usually a stiff and hard to actuate flipper means it has a strong detent and would flip pretty good. If it is hard to flip and still doesnt lock up it sounds like you may be putting pressure on the lockbar as you try and open the knife. This will make it hard for the detent to break free and teh added pressure from your fingers puts drag on the blade as it rotates. Are you sure you are using proper technique?

Yep, not holding the lock bar whilst flipping. I try to fire it but it needs some Viagra because it's limp as hell. My ZT 0400 and 0301 feel like rockets compared to this (and it's not just the assist.)

The lock bar I can totally feel galling when trying to unlock the blade. It's definitely making contact with the scale. Almost need two hands to pry it outwards.

I'm bummed.

Thats really odd. Especially the galling. Unless they did something stupid like making the lockbar insert out of titanium. Do you have any flippers that arent assisted?

It's Ti with a steel wear cap:

It's the steel that's rubbing against the aluminum scale...I think.

No flippers that aren't assisted, but I still practice good index finger technique.

;)

UPDATE:

I threw some Gun Butter lubricant on the locking bar end and ball and have been flipping it like crazy.

Using a plastic kid's knife to undo the lock bar and trying to wear it into the back of the blade.

Definitely has smoothed out and I can almost unlock the bar with my thumb.

Hopefully it just needs to break in but holy hell, out of the box it was sucking.

Not what I was expecting compared to the smoothness of a Sypderco or a Benchmade which cost half as much.

Keeping my fingers crossed since it's definitely a cool knife.

Well, it's off to Microtech because this happened:

Womp womp.

Is this enough lock up?

Certainly is easy to disengage the lock bar:

Just insert and twist! So easy.

Lastly, I think the freakin' blade is hitting the titanium backspacer when closing because the edge is flattening out:

Awesome!

I got a DOC in trade recently. I had been lusting after them ever since hearing "strider flipper". Bead blast finish should have kept me from pulling the trigger on the trade. The S30V had light spotting. Lock up on a good flip is extreme. Not fun to disengage the lock. Pocket clip is an abomination-- painful. Action feels gritty in closing.

Disappointed.

OUCH! I take it you got your DOC from the secondary market?
There is no excused for that kind of lousy QA on a $300+ knife! :grumpy:

I was looking at the DOC lately, but it's off my list now unless I can see the one I'm actually buying first.

I really hope they get your knife fixed quickly!

Thanks!

It's a good idea to have the one in hand before pulling the trigger, I just think I got a lemon. Lockup is sweet, no doubt about it, but my ZT301 feels just as stout and is a joy to operate.

I have no idea what is going on with the lock bar, it's impossibly stiff and I had to use that plastic knife to unlock it. No way my thumb alone could do it, I had to use two hands and fingers to pull it to get the blade to unlock. I even lubed the lock bar end and blade so there was as little friction as possible between the two surfaces.

I don't even know what to say about the blade edge flattening, the knife wasn't used to cut anything and it looked like it was getting worse and worse as I tried to break in the knife.

I took my Benchmade Adamas out to compare the flipping action and there was no contest. Same with my Spyderco PM2.

I guess this is what it's like going from a Honda to a Ferrari. More exotic, but definitely more problems.

:(

Ok so now that I've had time to look it over better I noticed some pretty glaring issues. The grind on my knife is completely uneven on each side. The swedge grind is awful. It goes past the centerline on one side and is what i assume is correct on the other side. So when looking down on the spine it's extremely uneven. I measured the front line of the swedge near the tip and one side is .40" while the other side is .54". That's a pretty huge difference. The blade is not centered in the handle. And the lockup is like 80% or more. Between all this and the crappy finish im pretty pissed off. This knife never should have left the factory like this. We're talking a $300+ knife here with errors that wouldn't be on a $100 benchmade or spydie. Needless to say it's going back to the factory. I just read my warrenty card and I am supposed to send them $15 for return shipping. WTF! So I'm supposed to pay shipping a total of three times because they sent out an inferior product? Thats some BS! I hope microtech fixes this issue.

I know this is an old Post but it is the same exact problem I am having with the DOC knife that I just received. It is a 2013 model but I bought it new and unused. The top swedge grinds are so uneven that the spine is curved and the blade looks crooked when it's closed. Anyone know if Microtech will fix this or replace it? They issued me a return authorization number but I don't want to send it in for several months and then find out they can't fix it.

Mine is perfect and locks up super tight. Flips very well. It's very impractical but a very showy knife.

Are you sure the lockbar is ti? I thought it was too but I read it is steel and remember using a magnet and it stuck. It's steel, with a steel insert. Why they'd do that I've no idea.
Yes, it's all steel I used a magnet again.

Straight from warranty, my troodon came back misfiring about every 10th time. That plus the button would damn near make my thumb the bleed. I’m turned off from ever getting another.

My buddy has the combat troodon which is amazing, but he spent basically 500 buying it straight from microtech.

I remember back when Skelton dubbed it the F. U. clip. Such a glaring issue, why don't they just fix it already?
