Microtech responds to Natrix.

Microtech seemed to have deleted their own press statement.

I didn't see that until just now. Interesting. The basic point was that KAI came over at Blade 2011 and talked crap to Tony and said they were going to knock Microtech out of the knife business. So Tony made the Matrix as a response. It also addresses the subframelock and has information from the Microtech patent from years back. I do recall Microtech having used a sub frame prior to the triple 7 and the knockout. They have been using one on a lot of their folder for a while.

I already said this over at reddit.com/r/knifeclub, but might as well say it here too:

Note that the first several paragraphs discuss the events surrounding Microtech's decision to rip off the design of the ZT 0777, but from the seventh paragraph on (starting with "It is, however, important to note...."), the letter switches to an entirely different subject, namely, the dispute over the sub-frame lock mechanism.

Essentially, Microtech admits in this letter that the Matrix is a ripoff of the 0777, but it was purportedly done in response to a threat by unknown KAI employees that ZT was going to build an OTF that would "remove Microtech from the OTF market." Even assuming this is true, no explanation is given for why Microtech/Marfione continue to sell a ripped-off design despite the fact that ZT never released a single OTF, let alone one that's a Microtech ripoff.

It's easy enough to claim that Kai made the challenge and made the other statement, but there's no proof. There's plenty of proof Microtech copied their design. I've seen a lot of Matrix posts on IG lately, I bet they're trying to push them as much as possible because of the Natrix

So a couple industry guys have had a few beers at lunch and talk some smack..doesn't make ripping off a design ok. This is part of the reason that I buy what I like or think is neat, pretty much no matter the maker (I have a few exceptions that are morality based but not many anymore) because all these companies cry so loudly when it's their design being copied and then turn around and do the exact same thing. It's hard to develop "brand loyalty" and then turn around and see "your guys" doing the exact crummy thing you railed about another company doing to them.

Whatever. Microtech makes a damn fine knife. Socom Delta is perfection. As is the ludt.

That a company would send official reps over to another company's booth to brag about putting them out of business is just flat ridiculous.

Also, based on the video and people I have talked to, the knife was displayed at the Bradley booth.

Then it shifts into this ridiculous line that the tab lock that Microtech and a shit ton of other brands use (Kershaw Blur anyone?) is somehow related to the patent on the subframe lock. The patent filing makes it exceedingly clear how it is different from a tab lock.

I read that whole thing and all I took from it is that at least someone at KAI wants to make an OTF. We should encourage this. A ZT OTF. I'm game.

So the response is simple. ZT should make a superior OTF, in a superior blade steel, and sell it for half of what the crap Mikrotek knives go for. :D Win/win.

This is the part that made me scratch my head as to how they thought they could convince people that an inset liner lock is essentially the same as the sub-frame lock.

This whole story just continues to prove that Anthony Marfione is a total douche. I'd kinda hoped that he'd been misunderstood, or mis-quoted...but no, HE IS A MEGA DOUCHE!!!.

That's impressive, really. The Mega Douche Title usually comes with a brass statue and a box of Kleenex with the lotion imbued in the fibers. Way to go, Anthony!

Supposedly someone talks a little smack, so Tony manufactures and sells a blatant copy? Am I reading this right?? If so this only proves that Tony is a total DOUCHE'....

What I didn't understand about the whole thing was where the sub frame dispute fit into Microtech ripping off the 0777? Was it a related or seperate issue?
