Other companies make knives without a choil, but the handle forces your hand well back from the blade. End result is the same, but people go ga ga over them. No explaining taste.

Back on subject, I hope they make some design changes on this new version of the Socom.

I was super enthusiastic about the new ram-lok version of the socom because I'm a lefty, and the original socom elite was a tip down, right hand specific setup. I like the look of the choil myself regardless of the design necessity of it's placement. I agree, it was a little disappointing to see how close the cutting edge was relative to the stop location, but the conclusions that people are assuming about the long term wear of the design I believe are inaccurate. At some point when the blade has become sufficiently worn there will be less material and will be further away from the back spacer. As well, if the blade is sharpened past the original contact point on the choil, it will hit the secondary contact point on the forward area of the ram-lok mechanism (see. pic with contact points A & B). The only unknown is whether or not contacting at piont B will cause any stickyness with the operation. This is what appears to be the case to me. Someone will have to use the hell out of this knife and report back. It's a brand new release, I like the asthetic and the ambidextrious setup, but I think it's initally a bit over priced (currently). The first wave was pricing at about $305.00, and now it's up to $352.00 for base. I'm ambivilant about how well the design will age for this model specifically, given the afore mentioned issues. So I think I'm going to hold out, wait for market saturation, and pick one up at a more reasonable price.
