Mighty Mite

Thanks for the great responses, very insightful! More and more I enjoy seeing those elegant little cutters. Thanks for the pictures!

At the moment my Mighty Mite is still doing great. I am surprised by how many tasks it can handle. It keeps a nice sharp edge too! So far a little stropping on plain leather has been enough to keep its grabby jet hair splitting edge intact.

Up till now I have rarely carried "black iron" blades so I am curious to see how this one will age.

Last week I was visiting a friend in Paris and he had a little surprise for me, an Old Timer Mighty Mite! This is my first American traditional and so far I am enjoying it a lot. I sharpened it on the fine Norton India and now it cuts like a little pocket scalpel. :D It is my current edc and I am going to see just how capable it is in day to day use.

Are there other people enjoying edc'ing traditionals this small?

Does any body know the correct name of the old style line lock it has? I was told the name but forgot.

I'm so happy (and proud), you have decided to EDC your new Mite before your new Gayle Bradley Air ! :-)
I also knew you would make it hair popping sharp in a glimpse!

Cheers
Nemo

What's the number on the tang on that puppy?

18OT, it's official number.

Thanks Nemo! Actually it is with the Air as back-up, but the little on has been holding up great. A fun knife journey getting to understand this little classic and seeing what it can do. :-D

I thought so. I got two of those at a yard sale (USA made) for $2.50 each a few months ago. One has been my home EDC for some time, love the knife.

USA Schrades - the grail quest

I really like little knives because 1. I like 'em in my jeans watch pocket 2. They're work friendly (khaki wearing desk job). I currently have a tiny muskrat in my watch pocket, and it shares time with Peanuts, small pen patterns, small Congress and stockmen. After seeing all these nice small Schrades I finally pounced on a NOS 108OT stockman.

My other small stockmen are stainless so it's about time I got something with carbon blades.

Old Timers, what knives used to be. And still cheap enough on the secondary market to be what knives used to be.

I'm up to 4 peanut size or smaller Schrades now. They seem to be a lot easier to find for me. I'm still on the hunt for midsize, especially Stockman, Schrades.

I think the Mighty Mite is a little smaller than a peanut. I never knew its actual name. It's a great knife. I love it for watch pocket carry while not at work. One of my more common "home" uses for a knife is "hand repair", fixing a broken nail, removing a sliver, etc.. I'm not too afraid to take out the Mighty Mite and do that where ever I am.

Although, you WILL get people who over react to even this lil' thang.

I carry that knife a lot. And love it. And it's a liner lock if no one answered. :)

Yeah, I'm with Dan. Liner lock is the only name I knew for those locks. Here are a couple pics of two '70's vintage USA Schrades that I own with those liner locks on them...

The big brother to the OP's knife is the 1940T and it's in near mint condition--never used, never sharpened. All its ever seen was the inside of that box! The Uncle Henry--127UH--folding hunter with the staglon scales has seen plenty of action. They are both really nice knives, especially for their age! That Mighty Mite would indeed make for a very nice secondary EDC knife. I say secondary only because my primary EDC knife is/has been/and will continue to be a Para 2--the ultimate one handed knife! (at least for my money)

I am so sorry for bringing this back to life. Apparently I am not able to send private messages. JD.... do you still have the Mighty Mite?

Has anyone reviewed/compared the USA made ones to the new ones made in China (I believe)?

Thanks for sharing that, it was an interesting review. I had an inherited a Mighty Mite in the early 80s from a "great uncle" of some distant relationship. I carried that knife through my teens and early 20's. The blades were sharpened down to about 50% before I ended up losing it some how. Of course by then I went on to cooler knives and multitools. I'm just now turning back to traditional pocket knives after stumbling onto your forum (I usually hang out at the tool place) and this subforum in particular. I've been carrying a SAK of some flavor for several years, but am thinking I may do just as well in EDC with a simple knife, and just have tools in reach as I always do anyway. Stumbling across the Mighty Mite actually brought a few tears to my eyes as I was a bit overwhelmed with the nostalgia it brought. I guess I know what I need to look for now.

I bought this Rough Rider "Mini Whittler" on a whim last week. It is 2 inch's closed and have had it in my pocket since to see how capable it is as an EDC. I must admit I also have a Sodbuster in a sheath also. So far it has cut a couple of pizza boxes, a few plastic tea jugs, a box my new Case Jackknife came in, some paracord and done some whittling. It is still sharp and surprisingly has been very useful for everything I've needed a knife for. I'm going to carry it until the first of the year to see how it continues to perform.

...

Thanks for the update on your little congress pattern knife, Randy. I like congress knives, but I just picked up my ruler, and 2 inches is REALLY small! So I'm not surprised that you were surprised at how useful it's been so far. :D Looking forward to occasional updates about your little experiment.

As luck would have it, I picked up a new mighty mite today after reading Frank's review. At first glance it's a solid little knife. I'd say mine is a step up in fit and finish from the rough riders that I have. It came pretty sharp, but a good stropping brought it up to shaving sharp. No play, the only blemish I found was an uneven grind, but perfectly suitable and it will even out in no time. I've been reluctant to pick one up, because you don't hear much about the new production old timers around here. But, I'm quite impressed. I'm going to carry it for awhile, and then I'll come back and give a more complete review.
