For all of our military members I have a question. What fixed blades and/or folders are being carried, issued or otherwise?

The only knives I were issued were the M9 Bayonet(Signed out from the Arms Room) and a Gerber tool, I hate Gerber so I gave that away, I carried a Leatherman of some kind. Last deployment was to Afghanistan, I carried a Leatherman Core, Vic Outrider and a Spyderco Military, no fixed blade on that deployment, not even a bayonet!

For all of our military members I have a question. What fixed blades and/or folders are being carried, issued or otherwise?

Most folks in the military use the following:

1. Knives they are issued. These knives have a National Stock Number or NSN. Find an NSN list and you can find what folks are issued.

2. Knives you can buy at the PX -- Benchmade, Gerber, Cold Steel, and Leatherman come to mind as being on PX shelves.

3. Movie knives that looked cool in the most recent action flick but are of little field use -- Rambo, The Hunted, etc.

4. High quality privately purchased blades by the small group of military personnel who are knife enthusiasts -- Strider and Zero Tolerance come to mind.

Based upon the conflicts we are currently in, the knives that see the most use are a one hand opening liner or frame locks and / or a multi-tool with emphasis on the Leatherman Wave because its pliers work well for fixing rifle malfunctions due to their small size.

If we ever go to war in the jungle or the cold weather mountain environment I am sure knife preferences will change. Mission drives the gear.

2. Knives you can buy at the PX -- Benchmade, Gerber, Cold Steel, and Leatherman come to mind as being on PX shelves

Thats mostly what I see being carried, mostly the Benchmade folders sold at the PX.

i believe the Fallkniven F1 and S1 models with the blacked out blades are both authorised for use by NATO troops.

mainly whats at the px, other knives that are popular are anything by rat cutlery or strider. knives that stand out in particualr are the T.O.P's tracker (seen both the small and full size) and the microtech cross hair. also some guys still carry randall made knives.

the benchamde infidel or other D/A OTF knives are also cool kid knives.

The marines go kooky over ka-bars

Oh and dont forget the multi-tool ive been issued 3 or 4 everyone has at least one.

How up to date is that list?

I stole the list from another forum.

The original post date on said forum is 27 June 2009.

Based upon how slow the system is to change NSNs I would bet the majority of them are still good to go.

Yea your Unit may be able to order but the question is will they, usually because of funds they may order some multi tools and some automatic Benchmades but sometimes your unit may not get nothing.

If I deploy again before I retire, I plan on taking the following, Spyderco Military w/Digi cam G10 and Black Blade, Leatherman ST300, A VIC of some kind and my Busse Tank Buster.

Im happy to see the Ryan model seven on the list. One of Columbia Rivers better productions. And one of my favorites.

I carried a MT D/A Socom through most of my tour. Kept a fully serrated Native (that Sal sent me for free) on my armor. Didn't have a need for a fixed blade.

When I was in I saw all kinds of kershaw, CRKT, gerber, buck, Striders, and emersons. A lot of guys carried cheapies, and a lot of times didn't even have them on them. Multi-tools were most popular. Few fixed blades that didn't see much use.

i was lucky i guess. when i was 1 AD 2-6 inf i got a camillus cqb cuda which i still have and carry. great knife holds a edge and performed all the tasks i wanted. also got issued a leatherman xti charge which is a awesome tool and you just can't find a something you can do with it. then i also got issued while in iraq a gerber applegate folding blade. its a decent knife i got a couple of them that i beat the piss out of and they just kept coming back for more. matter of fact i still have all of the above mentioned knives and they are still working and being carried.

though i suppose it all depends on how good your supply guy is and how nice you are to him lol. i found that they are the ppl you need to be coolest with and you will always be top on the list for random stuff that they can't get a ton of

I think the issued bayonet is fine, combined with a muti tool. I just carried about 1/2 the weight my nephew carried every day in the sand box. I only carried it a few blocks and was pretty well shot. Were I a soldier, I'd be looking to carry less rather than more.

Strange, my father was issued a 9100 BM Auto Stryker when he served on a patrol craft with the SEALs, funny its not listed there

For what it is worth, I'm AFSOC and a knife-aholic and I carry the following when deployed:

Folder:
Microtech Amphibian Auto or ZT 301 (TAD gear edition) or ZT350

Fixed blades in my E&E kit:
Crusader Forge TCFM XL
and when in jungle AORs I carry a Fehrman First Strike

Multi-tool: Leatherman Charge Ti

Fixed blades are still carried in the desert, but not in large numbers. It depends on the unit and mission.
Everyone carries a folder, mostly benchmade autos b/c most units issue 'em.

This list was thrown together by a Soldier. I don't think he had access to the NSW NSN list.
