Military carry

Apparently the Navy has taken a shine to Spyderco H1 steel. This was posted in the spyderco forums not long ago.

Thanks for your enthusasim for the Pacific Salt! It's one of my favorites as well.

I thought you might like to know that we're not alone. The black-bladed Pacific Salt has also been adopted by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps rotary-wing aircraft crews as an official-issue item in their SERE kits.

Great minds think alike... and appreciate great knives.

Stay safe,

Mike

You can get whatever your commander is willing to pay for and let your cardholder purchase with a GSA card as long as the vendor will accept it. But in my experience in several different capacities, including making those decisions, commanders are reluctant to buy any gear that isn't absolutely necessary or required by the table of allowance (TA). I have seen several units isssue benchmade autos to aviators (to replace the POS orange camillus switchblade chute knives we used to carry) but at $150 a pop (at the time), that eats into your budget pretty quick. Almost all units I've seen issue some sort of multi-tool. I've been issued a SOG and a Leatherman. Very few USAF units, except in AFSOC, issue fixed blade knives at all. It sounds like it's the same in most Army and Marine units as well. So, as written by previous posters, most of us are buying what we like on the commercial market.

Past Military Carries:
Small Victorinox (the really small one with the scissors, great for clipping cables) - lost
A small multitool whose name escapes me. It was smaller than a L-man micra and teflon coated. If anyone remembers a similar tool, let me know. I'd like to get another one. - confiscated in Kuala Lumpur
Sheffield Sykes-Fairbairn (when I was younger and thought it was cool) - in storage
Cold Steel Voyager, large, tanto point, half serrated - in storage? (I hope)
Cold Steel Voyager, small, tanto point, half serrated - lost (or stolen)

Current Mil Carries:
Cold Steel Voyager, small, etc - liked it so much I bought another one. It's been my EDC for about 10+yrs
Leatherman Core 300 - issued
SOG Multitool - issued
Camillus USAF Pilot's Survival Knife - bought myself because they stopped putting them in the survival vests.

I don't carry all these on me all the time. The Camillus stays in my PSK and other than the initial sharpening I gave it, is basically new (thankfully). The multitools are in my gear bags and get regular use if I'm not bumming one from someone else. The Voyager stays in my pocket and gets pretty regular use.

Segue -- I bought the first Voyager after a friend of mine who was on the AF IG told me that a crusty AFSOC Col once told him, "Every Air Force member should carry a knife. Big enough to kill a dog and small enough to go through a metal detector." I thought that was sage advice and before 9/11 it went through a lot of checkpoints.

What I will be carrying in a few days is a Benchmade 583 Warn Tanto. Just bought it on eBay for a pretty good price. Not sure if it will totally replace the Voyager, but it'll sure look cool in my bag.
