Military carry

Come deployment I'll be carrying my SOG seal pup elite and Gerber MP600 w/ needlenose + tool kit.

The way recruitment is going over here though it could be more then a year away and that could and most probably will change.

The final call is by your commanding officer.

I carried a Ka-Bar, SOG Tsunami and my own personal M9 bayonet for fixed blades. Later, I ordered an M7 bayonet and one of those cheap assed 1918 trench knife copies, and made an updated version by cutting the catch off the bayonet tang, tack welding a 1/4x20 bolt onto the cut off portion and then sticking the finished product into the barss knuckle handle and re-attaching the pommel screw.

Folders were my old Spyderco Endura II, CRKT M16-14ZSF, Mercator K55 and a Spyderco Native OIF edition that they sent me while I was there.

Had a Gerber 600 for cutting everyday stuff.

The most commonly issued knives are the M9, Gerber Tool, Benchmade 9050, Benchmade 9051, and the new Gerber 06. ;)

Coast Guard is really open about unit's purchasing knives for small boat crews. During one tour at a Surf Station, I received 2 different H1 Spyderco's, a non-H1 Spyderco, 2 Myerchins (one folding, one fixed). Gotta say, my BM2 ran the survival shop and was pretty into knives. We did alright. Two weeks after I left, they got mini-grips.

good to know some units out there are issued benchmade autos.. I think a fixed blade as well as a folder should be provided.

Strange, my father was issued a 9100 BM Auto Stryker when he served on a patrol craft with the SEALs, funny its not listed there

I've still got mine. Issued in '04 when I was with the Stryker Brigade. Awesome little knife.

From my vantage point it appears that the Army has slowed down considerably issuing most knives. On my first trip over everyone was issued a Gerber tool, a large Applegate folder, and squad leaders and above got the Stryker automatics.

It appears that most of what's being issued now are those little Gerber folders that have the rounded blade tip, kinda reminds me of those safety scissors that little kids are given.

The Army was spending some serious money on great quality knives, and Joe was ruining them, or losing them, before they even deployed.

I like my Gerber Covert Folder it seems to hold a good edge. I have even electrocuted it and have only the smallest arch. On the spine.

The military doesn't issue knives as a matter of course. The CO's of some units buy knives for the unit but most knives are purchased by the military personnel themselves for their own use. That's why you see so much marketing to military personnel. There is no such thing as an "official" military knife. I recommend you do what military personnel do and buy whatever appeals to you that will meet your needs.

why isn't machete on the list?

Around here the troups are issued either a BM knife or a Gerber multi tool before going over, depending on what they will be doing.

Many of the guys issued multi tools purchased CRKT folders simply be cause they're not knife people and that blade is really low cost.

Have two buddies who just returned this summer from "The World's Largest Beach" as they put it. Both were issued SOG Seal Pups and a Gerber Multi Tool. One also got the Spyderco Military, the other carried his own Cold Steel Recon One.

I've been lucky enough to have an amazing supply Sergeant this deployment. My unit has gotten Strider SMFs and DB-Ls, as well as Ontario SP16 Spaxes.

That's kind of unusual though. Last time all I got was a Gerber EOD tool, and a Benchmade 9050.

This time I have another Gerber Multi-Tool (in the desk drawer) and two different web cutters (one Gerber) one of which is on my IBA. Those were issued. In my pocket is a little Buck 373 I picked up in the PX (and which was really dull out of the package). Normally I carry my TNT but it's in the locker today. I have a fixed blade on the way; not that I need it, it just didn't get delivered before I shipped over.

Last time I had a Bark River (forget which model) but it basically sat in the hootch the whole time.

I got lucky being friendly with the all the supply guys and got a Strider SmF, SOG power lock, and Benchmade Nimravus and a surefire helmet light. But the knife i carred always was my kershaw blackout
