Military

This knife would be perfect for me if there was a tip down carry option. Forcing the user to carry only one way is kind of lame, especially on a knife such as this.

?? This is tip down only... Right hand (or left hand if you get the leftie version)

The liners are nested and partial so there isn't any way do to a 4 way clip without a major redesign and added weight..

Clip side (ti clip)

WHOOPS. I meant tip up. I've got too many knives jumbling around in my head right now. I'm pretty new to all these knives.

The liners don't need to be on both sides. Just extending the liner on the same side down to the end would be perfect, and it would allow people who carry it either way to do so.

I always love these statements. The Military does have liners on both sides. They are nested into the G-10 and skeletonized to reduce weight, but extending either or both to the entire length of the handle to support clip screws is going to add weight. That may not be a big deal to you, but I don't even carry the G-10 models anymore because they feel too heavy after getting used to the carbon fiber models. And when you are talking about nested, skeletonized liners, there is no "just extend", you are talking about a major redesign and new tooling to execute the change.

I think the whole "tip up vs. tip down" thing is kind of silly anyway. If you want to miss out on a great knife because you don't like where the clip is mounted, that's your loss.

I've learned that with a knife this large it's not wise to carry tip up - the user is forced to crawl their hand up the blade when drawing. That said, the jumping on the thumb ramp can be rough on the hand if you stick it in the same pocket the knife is in.

I think any blade over 3" should be tip down. The one hand operation is comprised when you have to push or slide your knife through your hand just to reach the stud or Spydie hole. Anyone saying otherwise is deluding themselves for principle.

Hmmm.....not so sure about that. Carried my ZT0301 tip up for a year and a half, never had to shift my hand to flick the flipper. Maybe I just have long fingers :D

Anyway.... tip up or tip down doesn't matter to me. The Military is an awesome knife just the way it is.

Well no you're right about flippers. I don't consider them when I describe tip orientation. IBought my first tip up flipper this year. They ZT 0801. When I talk about tip orientation I'm talking about reaching the stud or hole with the thumb.

Hi Carbonex,

Welcome to our forum.

When we designed the model, back in the mid 90's, We wanted to maitain the curved clip and tip down was the only solution. On future models (Millie 2, etc), the plan is for a 4 way clip (for which we will not doubt get beefs as to "all the holes". :p

That has been my experience as well. I have hands larger than average and I like the Military as it is. (I like the PM2 and Manix 2 as well.) I carry knives both ways and I find that carrying a long knife tip up not only takes a lot longer when opening the knife but is also less secure. Of course in my case this is clipped right front pocket in the tight jeans that I normally wear. People that carry other ways may need other clip options.

shoot. So much Military chat. I'll carry a Millie tomorrow and just stay out of Denver (3.5" blade length limit).

Took it to work today. Only 2 hours in and its getting dirty.

Love this thread :)
Long-time PM2 user, but I think I need another millie (I have only 2 :) ). I think spyderco does a good job on making things work for as many preferences as possible, but I never found it difficult to go from PM2 tip-up compression lock to millie tip-down liner lock and back. I have had more trouble going from a manual transmission to an automatic ;)

Outstanding knife. I resisted on it for a long time, but recently took the plunge and can't express how pleased I am. Carried mine all last week and over the weekend. Find myself fondling it at the most random times and love the sound of that solid lockup. The tip down doesn't really bother me that much though if I don't have it clipped I put it in the pocket tip up I guess because that's what I'm used to. Eagerly awaiting what the next sprint run will be. Love the black blade on mine but gonna have to have a big beautiful satin blade also...

Its all too easy to get addicted to the Military. I always reach for one when I have to do a lot of cutting. Then the long handle and longer blade suddenly make perfectly sense. I find the PM2 works better for EDC, but the Military is a real serious workhorse.

I like the Millie (and PM2, and Police) just fine with the tip down carry. However, there are over-3" blades that carry perfectly tip up, such as the Endura and PacSalt. There really are no 'shoulds', only personal preferences. For me, it doesn't really matter either way. I almost never clip carry anymore, but when I did, tip up or down was never that big a deal.

And this is why I know I am going to love this knife. Just like my PM2.

Full of dust, sand, silica and still locks up tight. A little lock stick but can't blame the knife. Can still thumb flick it. But very gritty.

Will just flush it out with hot water, a drop of lube and my Military will be ready for work tomorrow.
