Mills, square or round column....Update, machine on the way!!

RJSmith, is that knee mill 3 phase or 1 phase? I saw one similar but saw that it was belt drive and thought it wouldn't be able to do as much work as one that was a gear drive. How is it working for you, and what price range do they run in?

Jimmy, the mill is single phase and belt drive. Its been working out great for me so far, prices range around $3k last time i checked.

I second Nick's comments; I have basically the same set up. The Shureline mini is a great little machine and works well when asked to slot guards or square up some guard material.
I have a mid 80's J head Bridgeport; it only has a 1hp motor but with the gearing and the heft, it will do most any job I need done in my shop. There is no substitute for mass and having a rigid column.

I purchased the Bridgeport for 2,700 dollars, then added a 5,000 dollar three axis cnc control system to it. For us it was the better option. A new 3 axis cnc can run at least 25 or 30 thousand. The cnc was a must for our needs; we machine the parts for the Bubble Jig on it.

Good luck in your search for a machine; like all tools for the shop, buy the very best you can, Fred

Well, after so much research that I thought I might never want to type the word "mill" into google again and after listening to lots of great advice from the guys here in shoptalk and elsewhere, I officially have a machine on the way!! Can't wait to get it in the shop and running. Lots of new projects already on the list:thumbup:

Thanks for all the input guys!

Here is a link to the machine, not where I got it but a good picture. I ended up selling a bunch of my knife collection to upgrade to a knee mill with decent power, good sized table, plenty of features and versatility, plus it comes with power feed already installed!!. I think this machine will serve me well.

That is a nice looking machine Johnny! Be sure to get some pictures up once you get wired up in your shop.

Looks nice!

Let us know how it works out! I'll be needing one soon!

Nice choice! You're gonna like that mill

Thanks RJ,
I have to admit when you posted the pic of yours, I was pretty much sold. I had looked at that model in the past and just thought it was out of my price range. Funny how you can make something happen when you convince yourself that you have things you don't really need that can be sacrificed!!:D It helped that they offered free shipping. The freight can kill you on a machine this size.

That is great Jon. Happy to see you add such a nice piece of equipment too your shop.
Fred

That is AWESOME!!! So happy for you!!!!
You're big time now!
I feel like a junky that just got a small fix seeing that you got one.
Sorry about your collection. This knife habit sure does parallel a drug habit. Selling off your valuables because you "need" one more tool. Lol. I'm sure you will make it pay for itself in no time.
