Mills

It's funny..it seems no matter what tool I think about getting right before we purchase it a thread pops up with more details and pro's and con's of whatever tool it may be. My son is into guns and he wants LMS mini mill to help with lower's on AR builds and I figure it may be helpful for me . I plan on starting making blades with guards and I see a lot of guys use it for the slots. And the unit can drill as well. Going to take a little cash but we will split the costs at $600 ea with a starter set of tooling.

Thanks for info .

I spent a couple grand on a small mill, and use it to cut slots on guards. It does that quite well. I have cut a few hours off the process, and my carpal tunnel syndrome appreciates the majority of material is gone when I do the final finish.

mini mill was my 2nd big buy. kiln was first and i was using a 1x42 delta grinder and using my dads drill press. mini mill with R8 tooling was best bet for me fully knowing its limits (and vastly pushing past them and brakeing stuff :) ) all tooling was able to be moved to a bridgeport when i coudl find space and funds for it. 90% of the mini mills job was drillpress work 7% facing handle stock flat and 3% slotting stuff or using a dremel cutting wheels to slot a lockbar. when i was in the market i needed both a drill and a mill (and you cant mill on a drill safely ) the mini was bang for the buck the best buy. now days the LMS mill looks to be out of the box the top mini (had to do many things to my mini to get it better at somr things ) i now have a bridgeport and have not sold the mini cause its still handy for alot of things. all milling tho is now done on the bridgeport. Ti buterfly knife handles are cake now as are integral knives. the BP coudl use a rebuild but for me its ok till i can the funds together (DRO will come first tho) i got just about the smallest BP you can get. its a 36 inch table with dovetail ram (round rams could be found with 32 inch tables )

only way i think i woudl get rid of my mini woudl be if i got a good drill press in the shop and found a good deal on a small CNC mill. its jsut that handy
