Went to my web designer's house. Took a picure of my Commander. Two minutes later on the computer, we have a Mini Commander. Knife doesn't really exist.

So John/Bill, looks like we have another project. What do you think we should use as the base knife / handle? If we are going to try and make this I would like to go for a less than 3" blade for air travel and UK ownership.

Ed

Ok, no one likes my mini Commander. Maybe I'll just make it into a true satin finish Commander?

Most of the usual suspects are aware that I like smaller knives. Thus the CQC5, Mini 7, & the mini commander. I spend alot of time flying. I'm still looking for the perfect air travel knife. Try getting on a plane out of New York with a CQC6 or a full size Commander. Believe it or not, I've been carrying a Spyderco lady bug whenever I travel to avoid any problems.

I think that the perfect travel knife should be a production knife just in case they decide to confiscate it . Although the CQC5 falls within the definition of "Legal" size, I wouldn't want to take a chance with the security personnel at the airport giving me a hard time. More importantly I wouldn't want to miss my flight because of my knife.

I was recently given a hard time at the Empire State building because I was carrying a small Sebenza. Metal detector at the check point picked it up. I was asked why do you need a knife? I asked why do you need pants. The security at the check point gave me a dirty look, paused for a minute & handed the knife back to me. I waited on line for almost 2 hours just to get to the check point & was in no mood for him. It took me another 45 minutes just to get up to the observation deck.

Go for it, David! A sub 3" Commander would be PERFECT for airline travel. I'd buy two of them for sure. But what would be the appropriate name for a baby Commander? The Comma? The Travel Agent? I give up.
BTW, is that the Commander you just received from Botach? How's the quality? I might have to order another for myself if the fit, finish, and function of yours is up to par. Please let me know.

Ed,

Yup, that's the one I got from Botach. Thanks again. Fit & finish is above average. Lock up is perfect. Blade sits centered between the liners when closed, no rubbing. I did have a minor problem. One of the screws for the pocket clip was stripped? I don't know how. I went to check all the screws & that one screw turned with no resistance.Took it out & the tip of the base was stripped. No big deal took a screw off another knife & replaced it.

I also noticed that the finish on the pivot screw is different then my green G10 Commander. It's not shiney, looks almost parkerized (sp?)

Okay, let's stir the baby Commander pot a little more (and while you're here, check the pic of the "Waved AFCK" and let me know what you think).
http://www.luminousconcepts.com/Blades/CommaDamasca.htm

Here you'll find a size comparison between a full-size Commander and the fictitious "Comma", which is a downsized Commander variation. 10 minutes spent in Photoshop helped bring perspective to this monster that David created in my mind. I'm gonna lose sleep over this.

P.S. Sorry, edmoses; Didn't mean to rip your handle. My real name isn't Ed anyhow. I just created the name Ed Jezz as a play on the word "Edges". You keep using Ed, and I'll go by my real name which is Eric, k?

Eric's picture of the Baby Commander looks pretty damn nice.

I'm playing with some sketches, but it'll take a couple of days (I <U>didn't</U> get the holidays off!)

I'd rather go with the CQC7 for airplane carry. While I am a big fan of the Commander, I'd rather have something a bit more utility minded while on a plane.

Eric - no problem!

John, sorry to hear about the holidays, but the sketches sould be good. An thoughts on what we should use for the base knife? I was thinking of a mini CQC7 handle with a reworked commander blade?

Regards,

Ed

Mmmmmmm, I'm thinkin' that David is on to something. Use a reworked Commander body, but the trick is going to be keeping as many the original lines of the blade as possible.

John

I agree with John. The baby Commander just needs to be the next step down in size.
1.ES1-M
2.Commander (20% smaller than ES1-M)
3.Baby Commander(20-25% smaller than Commander)

When we say sub 3inch blade for airline travel (and jurisdictions that require sub 3inch blades), what would be most desirable for all of you? 2 and 7/8"? 2 and 3/4"?
And hopefully once we convince Ernie that this is THE knife to build, he'll give us dumpster diving privileges during the first few production runs

.
Maybe the mini CQC7 is ideal for many of you for airline travel, but that's a battle already won since Ernie is producing it. Place your orders for it and be happy. In the meantime, how about supporting David's Baby Commander idea? To me, it's the ideal airline knife. I suppose that those of you wanting the mini CQC7 are thinking "utility" primarily? I'm thinking more along the lines of attempted muggings in airport parking lots and restrooms, or another plane passenger becoming dangerously violent. THAT is when I prefer to have a Baby Commander in my hand as opposed to a mini CQC7. Just personal preference, that's all. ...but there's just something about that wickedly sharp Commander belly on a sub 3inch blade that gets my juices flowin'.

Vintage vettes, proto Emersons, and a good Rolex all tend to make me slobber. I refuse to apologize for such fetishes.
