Mini Grip Axis Spring failure

I tend to treat all folders as if they were slipjoints. That is probably why I still have all my fingers. I'm with Joe on this one, it could have been a bad batch of springs. Things happen. One thing to note, most of the time (there are exceptions) when someone cuts themselves with a knife (that isn't total junk, it's usually not the fault of the knife). If that is the case, then as one of our fellow forum members has stated, then pencils are the leading cause for misspelled words.

I got a reply just now! They will send me some new springs! Awesome CS! Guess the little guy won't see heaven quite yet! :P

I had a spring break on me, well over a decade ago on a 710. Since then I have had no issues whatsoever. I have had many, many liner locks fail just from spine whacking in the palm of my hand. Two Microtech Socoms and a benchmade spike just to name a couple. I trust the Axis lock 100%. Hopefully they will send you some springs.

Edit: I didn't see page two, glad to hear you got the springs.

if you don't manage to get the springs they said they would send, I can easily send you a couple.
I bought some music wire and made my own since my answer was that they don't send Springs out, I would have to return the knife, Shipping would have killed it, so I made my own, it's been over a tear and they are working just fine.

Shipping from Thailand is pretty cheap, probably about 6 dollars maximum.

Let me know,
Cheers

Ok thanks!

I will keep you posted, they said up to three weeks for shipping international.

That's great to hear they sent you out some springs. Maybe they will start doing that for us Stateside as well :D.

See these threads pop up from time to time. I e been fortunate I guess never to have had an issue with any of my axis lock knives.

I read a post quite awhile back now from a gentleman who recommended greasing the omega spring where it rides sling the frame. So I started doing that too. Just a tiny bit. Dunno if it helps or not in reality but I haven't had failures.

Hope they can work it out for you to get the needed parts.

Glad to hear they came through! It seems the omega springs are the AXIS' biggest vulnerability in the sense that every locking mechanism has some weak point. From what I understand though, if one spring fails it is very obvious in which the user can quickly identify and it doesn't completely kill the functional usage of the knife in an emergency situation. When this happened could you still use the knife?

I've also been told the same as above and usually use DuPont Extreme Fluoro on the omega springs and the metal they are riding against. If nothing else, I find it makes the operation of the already smooth AXIS lock even smoother.

15 years...millions of cycles...not a single broken spring. Hope that's not inviting trouble... ;)

I sold my mini grip and bought a Mini Stryker (903) instead. Haven't had it long, and already two springs have broken off! I haven't even used the knife! I have only played with it at home a bit. The first time one of the springs broke, the blade almost lost it's blade retention completely! Noticed it when I pull the knife out of my front pocket, the blade opened up quite a bit and just nicked me in the thigh. Luckily I didn't pull it out faster...(or else I might have teared up my pants!) ;)

Didn't notice the broken spring at first, just thought it had crappy blade retention, and that I definitely wouldn't be carrying the knife around anymore! After changing the spring (luckily BM send me a more than one set of springs for my mini grip! seems to be the same spring for both knives) I got confident carrying it again. Just picked up the knife now to see that yet another spring is broken...Don't know when that broke, checked it not long ago to see if the springs were whole..

I have always thought that the springs on their axis locks seemed a bit weak, but didn't believe that BM would use it if it broke off all the time. Perhaps I just having bad luck with my BMs, but I'm not likely to buy anymore BMs with their axis lock. They're not exactly "cheap" knives, but I do like many of their designs.

Now I'm thinking of selling it... Just have to tell the buyer not to carry it around just in case :D
It's a shame since I modified the blade a bit, quite happy with the results here

Seems like your doing something to abuse these knives, i have a few benchmades and have never had a spring break, and its hard to belive that both of yours had o spring issues...

Really don't abuse my knife at all! Open and close them. Think they would handle that, I flick it open, not aggressively, just enough to open the blade.
I have owned a few other grips before, and didn't have any issues with those. I'm really surprised that I have had so many spring failures on the two latest BMs...

Gee we never hear of an Omega spring failure without the usual "playing with it".
It is not a toy.

It's a tool that are supposed to handle getting opened and closet a "few" times. BM brand and for that price you really think they would last longer than your average "Chinese" made knife...
Again, I don't abuse my knives, if I would I wouldn't be dumb enough to post here complaining about them braking...And don't realize that I'm doing something that they aren't made for or couldn't handle. I don't open and close them excessively so the spring would brake due to exhaustion, if heat builds up to weaken the spring...

Great post! Very informative.👍 We should just close the thread now.
Seriously...they op's spring failed while he was performing normal functions, opening and closing a FOLDING knife.

Nevertheless, it does seem odd that SpyJ's springs seem to be breaking far more often than normal. Hard to imagine what could be causing it if not excessive cycling.
