I had a minor spree in an antiques centre yesterday, and picked up these.

After years of trying to find a Sheldon Knife (see http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1314602-That-Darned-Kitchen-Table-Again!), it’s strange that I’ve found two recently. This one by Wade & Butcher has brass liners, but is still a very simple knife.

The ring-opener by John Watts is in good shape.

As are these two older penknives, in MOP and tortoiseshell . Unfortunately, they carry no mark. I come across quite a lot of similar knives, and think they were made in Germany.

This George Wostenholm was probably overpriced considering its condition, but it’s an old knife I think, and one I found interesting. Tweezers fit in a slot in the mark side, the similar slot on the pile side (probably for a pin or steel toothpick) is empty unfortunately. Pile side tang has the ‘Oil The Joints’ stamp.

I can only think this is some sort of repro eating knife, but it’s quite nicely made :)

The Ibberson Penknife was quite pricey too, but I like Ibberson knives. I remember the Sheffield branch of Kennings car showroom, which is now a cinema.

Beans on toast for the rest of the week ;)

Thanks for looking

Good going on the haul!! They are all very nice, but the large knife with the real fancy scabbard, Silver/Pewter? I laughed about the baked beans on toast, my wife still gets a kick out of that when I mention it.

That eating knife is so beautiful, really stunning. I love all the detail work !!!:eek::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::D

Second favorite for me is the Ibberson.

Nice haul Jack !

Beans and toast ? - I've been there before. ;):D:D:D

The large silver one is a Gaucho belt knife and very nice!! Some great finds and congrats on the Sheldon and since its a Wade and Butcher...double congrats:D

Thanks Russell :) I really don't know about the large knife, it doesn't have the weight of pewter, the inside of the chape has the colour of uncleaned silver, but there are no markings, and I don't think it is silver. It reminds me of 'sterling silver', it could be a tourist item, though it's quite nicely made. It'll be interesting to see how it ages. If I manage to keep it away from the clutches of my girlfriend, I know what I'm going to be eating my Turkish Delight with, the next time I'm hanging out with the desert tribesmen! Or perhaps spearing a stray baked bean! :D

Very cool finds, Jack.
Is that real tortoiseshell? I confess I've only ever seen faux, so I don't really know what the true stuff looks like.

And yes, I've been on the "knife diet" more than a few times, myself. :D

Thanks Gev, good thinking, perhaps it was a souvenir from Argentina or something, a sort of Gaucho letter-opener! :D

Thanks r8shell, I believe it is :)

So jack when are you posting all these knives to me ? :D nice finds mate treat your self to some bacon grill with the beans on toast:D

Thanks R.c.s., I'm not sure my budget will stretch to Bacon Grill! ;) :D

Thanks Jack, it is keeper I'm sure. could be Sterling but whatever it is made of it looks like a top notch knife. You used to be able to get baked beans and small sausages in the same tin, that'll keep you going.

That's a criollo, AKA the gaucho knife.

Check out this thread.

Thanks Christian, good link  The blade on this one is only 5", stainless, and unsharpened, so a tourist piece I imagine? I saw a beautiful Gaucho Knife in the market a few months ago, hafted with horn and silver, but the seller wanted a huge sum for it, and there was no sheath.

They were a staple of my boyhood camping trips! :)

I would guess that gaucho is mounted in silver of a purity less than sterling or coin, which might be a good idea to keep the scabbard from bending or squishing. I don't doubt it was brought back by a tourist, but I don't think it's a tourist piece in the same sense as those Italian-hilted foils stamped Toledo that break if you look at them too hard.
I'll go read that link before I make a fool of myself.

It seems fairly decently made SP, but perhaps intended more for use as a letter-opener rather than carving meat? If I can get an edge on it, it might make one heck of a fancy steak knife though! :)

Thanks for showing the haul Jack. Some nice pieces. The IXL must be smaller than I at first thought. I look forward to buying your beans at our next meet :D
