Missunderstood with knives

I just started hanging them in my kitchen, that way it looks acceptable. I own every knife in the collection to include hand forged Steak Forks and Knives (6 Sets).

I don't even consider knives an obsession, they are just in every room, on every key chain, pocket in the car, backpack. They are just tools, and ones I happen to use often.

Ooh, I don't have one in my Golf Bag!

I live in a pretty rural area, I'll go as far as to state, most people here carry some sort of folder. Knife collecting is common, and more modern folders are very prevalent amongst traditional folders. Not unusual at all. People are interested in knives generally.

This, sir, is a signature worthy quote!

I am honored sir.

I just do my thing and try not to behave in such a way that would draw negative attention to myself. There are a lot of people out in the world that sit on the edge of their seats, waiting to "tattle tale" on their fellow humans and stir something up out of nothing. I've seen it at work, some folks make your business the sole focus of their existence and can make mountains out of molehills.

That's it. You should try to be a "knife ambassador" and all that, but even then you will have *some* overreaction. These aren't "knife hating sheeple", they're folks who are buttheads about everything.

I do like to come here to drool over steel and it is refreshing to find people with the same hobbies and interests. The wealth of knowledge in this forum is also another thing that draws me here. I think i learn something new every day by reading some new threads.

I believe all of us only have one problem (that is not our obsession)... we never have enough money for all the knives we want (or need).

Me too. I don't think I'm misunderstood at all. I just like lots of gear. I'm a gadget guy!

Yes, My co-workers makes fun of me cuz i like flashlights and Knives, dont Know Why.. I Guess it could be because They dont have Anything to put their money in.
One time a Co-worker asked me who i was going to kill after i bought a Cutiss F3.. Like "who is Worth to kill with this expensive knife" he thought it was very Funny, as were the other Guys. I didnt..

I wish i knew more people who enjoyed knives cause its annoying when people react so negatively. Its just not necessary for that kind of reaction.

I've been carrying a knife since I was a boy and have NEVER had anything like the OP talks about happen to me. Either it's just different down here or I don't notice because I really don't care what someone else thinks, anymore than I care about what their into.

Live and let live.

Usually nobody is even aware that I am carrying a knife. And if I need to use it to open a snack package or a carton at work, it is out of my pocket, opened up, done it's work, and back in my pocket in less than a blink of an eye. Not that I fear that someone will see my knife, it is because quick-drawing a knife from concealment is one of my key martial art studies and I practice it all the time to see how fast I can do it, and keep my skills up, like how the great samurai legend Miyamoto Musashi stresses in his Book of Five Rings. My friends and colleagues know that I carry knives and like knives and no one ever batted an eye about it. Probably because I am also a very friendly and social person who does not give off the "creepy" vibes. :) I know people who are not into knives or combat at all and yet, everybody avoids them like they are Jack The Ripper or something because they are downright weird, you know what I mean?

But so far I have never had anyone make an issue of why I carry knives. People tend to think that the Evil Assault Demon Guns are far more deadlier and dangerous than puny little knives or "ancient bows and arrows". LOL if they dabble in the world of true martial arts just for a minute they would find their misconceptions literally, put to the sword :)

You should post a video of your quick draw technique.

There are a lot of "discreet"knife lovers out there. I was once in an administrative law hearing room full of lawyers dressed in suits. One guy takes a knife out of his suit coat and I am thinking, "Well, here we go. Let's see how many people give him grief for having a knife." Next thing you know everyone in the room has pulled out all sorts of knives and are showing them around. Then the hearing officer walks in. Everyone freezes and expects the worst until the hearing officer pulls out his own knife. A good time was had by all. One guy in the room didn't have a knife. He said he was going to get at least one so he wouldn't be left out of the next show and tell.

Somewhat surprisingly, I've never had any negative reactions to any of my knives, and I usually have one on my person, and several scattered around. Even some of my hyper-liberal art-student friends have been interested when they see one in my car or apartment.

Nothin' pretty nothin' fancy. Just whip it out, flick it out, do your thing, tuck it in. (Get your mind out of the gutter guys) Thats all. The thumb knob on a regular tactical folder makes it even easier. An assisted opener makes it even more easier. Practice it alot, you just get a bit quicker. Practice it even more, you are now qualified to discuss it as part of a martial arts curriculum :)

I live in a very "gun-hating" city and state so carrying a defensive firearm is out of the question. But I am NEVER EVER without my trusty Dakota frame lock folder. Sometimes I have my Smith and Wesson SWAT and I alternate between the two. Both are heavy duty tools and extremely effective defensive weapons if they are ever called upon to do that duty. Wherever I go, I ALWAYS have a knife, a lighter and a flashlight on my person. I consider them to be the BASIC tools of everyday necessity.

I can see that you sir, are a connoiseur of knives.

I don't know. I know I mentioned I was cutting food with my pocket knife and slipped and that's why I had a bandaid to a girl in one of my classes once. She said she didn't know why someone would carry a knife. That's the worst I've gotten. Sometimes when I get over excited about a new knife or getting in knife making supplies friends/family in the vicinity will be confused or find it unusual. But other times they have shared in my excitement. So whatever, it's all good. I think more people appreciate knives than we think. The problem is we all project this fear of the interest into everyone else, and therefore are always defensive.

Most folks in my family collect/used to collect (the dead ones) "something", things that go bang, salt-n-pepper shakers, cook books, shot glasses, marked golf balls, clowns, Barbies, beanie babies, seashells, etc. I'm the only one into "sharp, pointy objects", i.e., fixed blade knives, bayonets and swords.

We all realize and accept that we don't understand why "person x collects y" and that the other folks don't understand why we collect what we do.

The only thing everyone else in my family agrees on is that my blades and my brother's guns cost more than their items and that our stuff seems to hold or increase in value better than their stuff.

I open-carry a small fixed-blade Kabar 1232 every day. Most of the few comments I get are to the tune of "why do you carry that?" or "Is that legal?" Those folks get a comment back on the order of "Because this is my preferred knife type." or "Sure is, in fact, it's 1.5 inches smaller than max legal."

Occasionally, I get get the dumba%% question of "Who you gonna stab/kill/cut with that?"

My response to those folks is to stare at them for a moment, shake my head and say "what kind of dumb s$%^ question is that?" and proceed to ignore them.

I think most people are, but could give a rats bum what people think of me. I just keep in mind that most people where I live (Orange County), have possibly never been outside their bubble here and mind them when deploying such a primative tool. My fiancee didnt understand either, until I bought her a little pink Kershaw chive. Now she understands.

Funny story: The other day me and a few friends were hanging out at the park with some other lady we just met and I pulled out my Kershaw Tremor to throw it in to the grass like it was a throwing knife and 1 minute later the lady jumps in her car and drives off with out saying good bye or anything. I guess she got spooked seeing the Tremor.

I'd be spooked if some guy pulls out a knife and throws it into the grass for no apparent reason. Then the same guy thinks it's a "funny story" and wonder why he's "misunderstood".

I tend to think that each individual sentient being lives in its own universe or "reality bubble"(RB). The entire variable experience history of that being's sentient life creates the patterns of judgement that results in that being's behaviour could be considered their "belief system"(BS). Sometimes, through either an exotic event or a neurochemical flux, or even just a skip in the predicted routine of everyday life, a new, thing or event is observed, and it triggers a response that modifies the "reality bubble"(RB) and requires a change in the "belief system"(BS). In our society some of our parental upbringing has been too protective, and fear of the consequences of potentially dangerous material objects (knives, guns, motorcycles, lawnmowers, etc.) has replaced respect, knowledge through training & instruction, and even the oxymoronic "common sense". The fear makes the items facinating and causes foolish behaviour in some, revulsion in others and many states in between. Fear based flight or defensive posturing ("who ya gonna stab w/that") just shows a natural response to that observer's "reality bubble"(RB) in flux and their "belief system"(BS) being challenged; it (RuBS) them the wrong way. Sorry, that's my "BS".
