Well, the wife(a converted city-girl, now tent camper) and I spent this past weekend camping at our favorite local lake and I, a lover of building campfires, took it upon myself to try a couple things I have never done before.

While playing around, I used my BK2 to baton and whittle some components for a bow drill setup. Mind you, I know the setup is wrong, but the original intent was to play around and learn something new while "wowing" the Mrs. :)
Here is a short video of me working the drill and partially explaining to my wife the operation of the drill.

Another first, was the upside down fire. I had only recently heard of this style of fire mentioned and was intrigued by the simplicity. Going off of the few pics I recollected from the net, I constructed what my wife affectionately calls the "Pineapple upside down fire"( She makes a pineapple upside down cake to die for :)).

The start of our great fire!

And now into the base layer.

And one final image of that awesome fire my wife now says I have to make from now on. :)

AWESOME ENTRY!!!!

I dig the upside down fire. If I have the time, it's the one I like to use.

It's also fairly decent for cooking.

Great job.

You take the lead...

This post is dedicated to my Great Uncle Bobby.

A True story from the Hills of West Virginia.

I'm gonna tell you a story as I build this fire. My Uncle Bobby grew up in hard times...real hard times. There were 13 kids in the family and jobs were few and far between.

(Gonna make me a fire with Cinnamon Altoids )

(Just funnin ya here is my fire box.)

So Uncle Bobby and one of the other boys left the homeplace and built a small cabin up in Sweetwood Holler...just across the creek from the little waterfall.

(Steel Striker, charcloth, tinderbundle, and a piece of Kanawha Black Flint from here in West Virginia.)

(Spark jumped on my charcloth and now I got an ember.)

(and into a second Tinder bundle)

So Uncle Bobby did what a lot of people did during those hard times. He began makin' 'Shine and gettin' by best he could.

(Can you guess what knife I'm usin' to sharpen the side sticks?)

(A full knife photo if you need another hint)

Uncle Bobby was "gettin' by" as best he could when folks around the area began having chickens turn up missin'. So they went down to the Constable's Office to report their missing chickens and see what could be done about it.

100_0162.jpg

So the Constable got to askin' around and word' got around about Uncle Bobby living up Sweetwood Holler. So the Constable decided to go and talk to Uncle Bobby to see if he knew anything about the missing chickens.

100_0162.jpg

100_0164.jpg

So the Constable went and found that little cabin...in Sweetwood Holler...across from that little waterfall...and he found Uncle Bobby in front of that little cabin. He began askin' Uncle Bobby if he knew anything about them missin' chickens. Uncle Bobby told him "WHY THERE AIN'T BEEN A CHICKEN AROUND THESE PARTS IN 20 YEARS".

100_0171.jpg

About that time the rooster Uncle Bobby had tied up behind the cabin began to crow.
Right then and there my Uncle Bobby and that Constable became such good friends that Uncle Bobby went back to the office with him and lived there for a spell.

So here's to you Uncle Bobby, though you no longer walk the Earth with Us, as long as we have the memories and share the stories you will never be truely gone.

alright, here is the final decision!

BPrepared304

you won!

I really like the flint and steel, the knife, the chickens, and most of all, the story.

Send MKK your address and he will send it out.

Thanks.

Congrats BPrepared! Great post. And thanks to MKK and Kuke for a fun contest.

Thanks MRKNIFEKID and KUKE, My Great Uncles were the kinds of guys who were woodsmen and got into trouble from time to time. Growing up I loved to here stories of their "adventures" . I am glad you enjoyed the story. Making the post was as fun as telling the story....and the chicken wasn't bad either.

MKK,, I recieved the spyderco today, thank you very much. The first Spyderco I have ever owned, I am liking the opening thumb hole action.
