Mnandi improved

I would like to acknowledge the improvements Chris Reeve Knives have made to the Mnandi recently and applaud them for it. The pivot pin has been made smaller and no longer caps over the inlay. The VHB 3M tape holds the inlay just fine and having the pivot pin off the inlay imparts less stress on the wood. The pivot pin is now sunken in and the knife is slimmer and more flat. The mnandi clip has also been redesigned and now looks more integral to the overall design rather than simply a (very beautiful) clip. Bravo CRK!

I totally agree! My new cocobolo Mnandi has all the improvements and I'm digging it!

Chris D. :D

I haven't bought a Mnandi in years, my last one might have been the one for my daughters birth over six years ago. I need pics of the clip, Johnny!

I love the new design and ordered a gabon ebony version

I received mine 2 months ago......
Wow what a little knife! And the macaser ebony is really pretty!!

You are in for a real treat.....

Never owned the "old" version, but I simply love it

Can you post some pics of each to see the differences side by side...? I am currently mnandi-less.....sniff. I noticed the smaller blade pivot, but I haven't seen some good pics of it and I have yet to see the difference in the clip.

The Mnandi section at GPKnives has some new Mnandi's with the new pivot and clip shown in their photos.
I'm sure someone will post pictures here soon too.

I'm fine with the old style because my Mnandi has become my EDC beater. It is getting used for cutting appliance cord, kitchen duty, breaking down cardboard, cutting plastic shipping material, and even scraping paint off of a vintage book case. It is a great user knife that is still looking great. I plan to use it hard to see how well it holds up over time. It is getting treated like one of my user slipjoints that gets dropped in my pocket for all the dirty work.

Hope you are doing well, James. It's been a while, time sure flies doesn't it?

You did some lego on the knives?
The clip an the pivot do not match.

Is it possible to use the knife without the new style clip?
Thanks in advance. :)

The new pivot is nice but the old one has more class, IMO. The new clip looks chunky..

I didn't like the changes at first, but your pics, Johny, have brought me around.

I like that the pivot is protected by the inlay and not sitting above it to pick up scratches every time it's put down.

With the clip, I bet you can pinch it at the logo to pull it out of your pocket to pull it out easier than with the old design, which amounts to trying to grab hold at the screw, which is a small target, or grab the tail of the clip, making it grip your pants more with any pressure put on it. Where the logo is on the new one is a big target that you can grip hard, since it's right above the screw so won't make it grip your pants.

I spent some time looking at dealer pictures and have come to the conclusion that I prefer the original version, but that's just IMHO/YMMV. The changes wouldn't keep me from buying another Mnandi.

It sure has and it sure does Johny! Thanks for the pics, the side by side shots make it clear that it is a new, improved Mnandi.

Is the pocket clip removable on the new version? Can you carry it without the clip? How does it look?

I preferred both the original pivot and original clip when I first saw the new versions but both changes have grown on me. I think the new clip looks better in person than it does in pictures. I'm sure the clip is removable but you may need the original clip screw and female bolt. Unfortunately, I am overseas at the moment so I cannot test this. The pictures above are of 3 different mnandi. The African Blackwood and the Desert Ironwood may get confused but they are two separate knives. I did not change any parts around. The Bark Ivory was made in the very short period of time while CRK was using the original clip with new pivot.

Thanks JoHnYKwSt for the great comparison pics, and explanation - I too got confused between your African Blackwood and the Desert Ironwood. I really like all your Mnandis, just beautiful.

Pics please tomsch? Infact, pics of any well used Mnandis would be great!
