Back to trying to define terms such as "bullying", etc. No doubt a tough job, trying to moderate behavior in a public forum. Not a job I would relish, that's for sure. Where do rudeness and bullying intersect?

The problem is with establishing rules that hamper real discourse. Generally it squelches too much and accomplishes too little. And the concept of "policing" really bothers me.

Hi David,

I don't think you need a poll or anything else here. It is quite obvious how it works.

If Kevin says something offensive....Roger takes care of it.

If Roger says something offensive....Kevin takes care of it.

All other issues...STeven takes care of it.

Like or not people are going to disagree. I realize that many members want that Kumbaya feeling. The reality of the world is that people are opinionated. Instead of holding hands and singing songs I like the to see people speak their minds. Even if it pisses someone else off. You can always hit the ignore button!

Personally, I like the lack of moderation on this sub-forum. I think threads should be allowed to stand or not on their own merit and progress to a natural ending.

P.S. I didn't vote because the options don't apply.

My impression is that the moderators do a good job by rarely interfering. That's not negligent in my opinion.

There are certain attitudes that I enjoy more than others but it's really not my place to tell others how they must behave.

Just my 2 cents worth.

And might I add...I've learned a lot from all the bickering and heated discourse

This place has one moderator who has not posted in nearly a year and another who rarely posts as well.

A laid back approach to moderating is a good thing.

However, non participation by the moderating team is not such a good thing, and some involvement might have helped avoid the latest fracas here

Higher taxes would curb our deficit....right?

Brilliant.....

And there it is! We are all adults here, why do we need a nanny? Unfortunately some people feel the need to act like self-appointed mods and carry on as if this area is their personal fiefdom. Breaking news: if it doesn't say 'moderator' under your handle, then you ain't one!

If people wouldn't act like a bunch of self-important jackasses we wouldn't need any moderators.

Moderators do their jobs and vollunteer endless hours to keep peace, but the membership is perhaps the biggest most powerful force in keeping things on the level. If a member starts acting out insulting, hurting and trolling, such behavior will come back into their face as this site will become an unpleasant place filled with enemies that could have been friends.

This forum is different because of the subject matter. The knives are expensive and unique, the members largely willing to put effort and money into participating in this complex market. People like this have a right to firmly held and fiercely defended opinions.

Moderators can enforce a code of courtesy. I bet doing so would send the most dedicated members of this forum elsewhere. This is not a a schoolyard, it's where the grownups play. Grownups who have learned to have a high opinion of themselves.

If a discussion becomes so overheated that the topic is pushed aside by the personalities, don't throw more fuel, walk away. Let them have their sparring match, by themselves, while you participate where a topic dominates instead.

I only wish the moderators would move non-knife threads (like the recent Kohaii and Lorien ones) to whine and cheese. Let the boys play in the mud there :) Watching kohaii, roger and les spar and then reading their work or having them quoted in the knife rags is what makes this forum better than real-TV :)

Hi Brownshoe,

I would welcome a chance to "play" with you in the Whine and Cheese.

Be careful what you wish for.

BTW, Except for you, every other person in this thread supports this thread with their time, mind and money.

Why don't you?

Quite frankly the time and mind part you bring to this forum is basically worthless. So cough up the $20 will ya! :D :D :D

What is the job description of a Moderator?

I agree with there be non-moderation on this forum, and I also agree with the previously stated opinion that many have a high opinion of themselves. In fact I get the feeling here that some have a much exalted position here and are untouchable in their own minds. That is the problem IMO. Nobody that posts on this board are really anything in the grand scheme of things on this earth; and I feel that there are some that should learn this. The "this is the way I am so get over yourself" works for an adolescent, but IMO adults should learn self control and respect and show it; especially here! The excuse means to me that the individual is not willing to modify their actions to fit the situation at hand. There are a number of people here that fit the mold in my mind- and such attitudes ("my self image is more important than the places than I frequent or politeness") bring down the community as a whole.

For instance, I do not like wire inlaid handles or many other features that are shown excessively here. I do not denigrate the maker or owner, I may show appreciation for a feature and mention that another feature is not for me, and I leave it at that. I use my knives- I do not denigrate those that do not, even when I ask if it is a user. If a thread has nothing to offer me, or is aggravating I leave and go on with my day. If I ask a maker what usage they had in mind and they treat me like a jerk and ignore my question while answering me- I ignore the maker and move on (and this has happened). It really is simple, and if it is not perhaps a hiatus should be something considered.

I am not saying that we should not speak our minds, nor am I saying that we should not show our dissent. I am saying however, that one of the reasons I do not post here often is because I am not seen as "one of the big boys" and do not feel that I will be given the respect for my opinions as any member of this forum should. This is where the "big boys" of knifemaking play- and I am a man who does not wish to interact with men acting like children, thus my limited interactions here.

I have been on this forum for a long time, and if the juvenile antics and lack of respect among some members keep me away I can only think of how many new members that would contribute based on years of their experience; or new members looking to get into custom cutlery are driven away. There are enough negative reasons to distrust the custom segment of knife collecting already- why add more?

I feel that there being no moderation in this forum leads it to where courtesy and common rules of politeness are often ignored. If you dislike a comment or disagree with it- fine. Say why and give reasons for it, and agree to disagree and move on. For anybody with a modicum of self control it is not that hard.

Higher taxes would curb our deficit....right?

How the hell does this bring anything to the discussion at hand- especially as this thread is directed at you? This kind of response is exactly what I feel this forum does not need from Moderators, let alone anybody else?

As a moderator would you like to actually add anything to the discussion at hand from your point of view- I am sure that your point of view on the subject would be welcome.

I've said my piece now and will fade back into the shadows....

Darby does a fine job of Moderating this forum! :)

He also checks in here every day or two, so he is watching...
