Man, I cannot tell you how much I have missed you!

Glad to see you are still kicking.

Great wishes for 2011.

Best Regards,

Randy,
How often do you visit this forum?
David

2knife, If you want to enjoy the presence of constant moderating and see what Moderators can do go post in the Traditional Forum for a while and see how long it takes to get "corrected". I think the C&H forum just offsets the balance of moderation between the two sub-forums:D

The questions are specific to this subforum and thread, and the moderators are engaging in some form of dialogue. A good beginning. My questions are simple..

Moderators: How were you guys chosen? Do you visit here often? What are your duties?
Thanks,
David

Big can of worms. There are a few I've noticed who fairly routinely make insulting and/or condescending posts, but they're everywhere (a-holes, that is), and you can't just "police" them away. There will always be those who know everything about everything and anyone who doesn't agree is an idiot with no clue (and if you are too stupid to realize it, they will be happy to point it out to you). But, ban one, another will soon take his place. If someone can't handle them on the internet, I shudder to think how they can function in the real world.

Besides, once that starts, the over-moderation eventually kicks in, as does the brown-nosing, cliques, teacher's pet/Eddy Haskell syndrome, (real or perceived) uneven application of the "rules," etc. How long can you keep a moderator if 20 hours of his day is eaten up by "Mom! Billy said I'm a rat fink for no good reason!" emails? (Gee, can you tell I've moderated before?)

I have to agree with most others that in this case, less is more, so long as the less is evenly applied.

This forum is different because of the subject matter. The knives are expensive and unique, the members largely willing to put effort and money into participating in this complex market. People like this have a right to firmly held and fiercely defended opinions.

Moderators can enforce a code of courtesy. I bet doing so would send the most dedicated members of this forum elsewhere. This is not a a schoolyard, it's where the grownups play. Grownups who have learned to have a high opinion of themselves.

If a discussion becomes so overheated that the topic is pushed aside by the personalities, don't throw more fuel, walk away. Let them have their sparring match, by themselves, while you participate where a topic dominates instead.

Most. Excellent. Post.

Darby and Randy - two good guys that go waaaaay back and know what's what. We are in good hands. I shudder to think what this place would look like if some of those bucking for their jobs were put in charge.

Roger

David, the results of your poll (and I do agree it was response biased) would indicate that things are pretty good just as they are. Therefor your repeated questions concerning job description, duties etc are rapidly becoming moot. Why not pose these questions direct to Spark via PM, and perhaps get direct from the source?

Paul

Paul - you're going to have to work on this chronic bad habit of making sense.

Roger

I used to mod this place. Not an easy task at all. When I called it quits I felt that if they were interested Randy and Darby (two good guys) would be good choices. I still feel that way, there are way to many egos here that feel the need to get ego's involved with knife collecting and making. I hope they continue and continue in the same way they have handled this place, but fully understand that they may decide not too. Been there, done that and there is no way to please everyone and keep them happy.

I am thankful for the usual guys who douse those fires which crop up time to time.
Paul, Coop and others I am thankful to be able to call you friends. Your contributions here on many levels are invaluable.

I am also thankful to many other friends here for the knowledge they impart. (albeit there are times I wish they would put a little whipped cream on the occasionally thrown brick, they are friends and I know that the whipped cream is really not in their nature.) ;).

I feel that this forum is constantly evolving as everyone gets to know one another. This is a community in the truest sense of the word.
I think that things are running pretty much as they should in here.

Desiderata

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
