Modern Day Robinson Crusoe!

Barrabas,

Sounds cool, I'd be interested seeing how he makes out... I gotta tell you, I think that I would be comfortable in many environments with a Tram machete and an SAK....

I wonder if you could get fire from that volcano? would it be possible to get close enough to the hot stuff with out burning yourself?

AH, he's French.....He'll only make it about half way and then give up....... Just kidding, just kiddding.

300 days condensed down to a 50 min. show? comon', make a series out of it.

Sould be neat to watch though.

He will bore his prey to death by reading from the European Constitution.:D

Seriously, sounds neat. I wish they would break it up into series too. Maybe if there's enough response/interest. I'm sure they have buttloads of footage to use after 300 days!

Regards,

Dave

Looks to be interesting, I will definitly try to watch. I think it would be a lot of fun but I would at least want to bring some rice as backup/supplemental food.

300 days is a long time, even with just the SAK and Machete (okay choices BTW). I hope he's had extensive classes on jungle/island survival. Not sure if that's the island he is planning to stay on, but as long as it has fresh water, he'll have a good start...without substantial food, he won't make it past 90 days.

"Xavier’s only luggage will be a Swiss army knife, machete, video camera, and a solar panel for charging the camera. He will spend 10 months alone on an island to develop another way of life through an exciting adventure, a return to the elemental sources. Xavier will survive alone on an island without human interference and without polluting emissions."

as was pointed out in the comments below the snippet in the link,
what about 300 days worth of tapes?
and one of those guys says that the island pictured is civilized at least seasonally, according to some light research and google earth scanning...

and how exactly does he expect to just find food? i realize that islands like that are apparently rich with all kinds of food resources, but if he isn't even taking some fishing supplies or something, i don't know how he expects to harvest anything but fruit...

looks like it could be really cool, but i am a bit skeptical that the ad is telling the entire story...and if it is then i wonder how long he is seriously going to make it...

No polluting emissions? Imagine the bowel movement he will have after 300 days of holding it in. :D

I think it is either destined to totally fail, or there will be a lot more supplies and support than is listed.

So no fires for 300 days? I realize it's probably warm there but man, I think I would want the ability to cook and boil water. I guess you can get around cooking and boiling water to some degree...but it seems a little risky in the tropics to me. I have never been past Guatemala myself but man, everything there festered overnight and infections were pretty common, I thought. I would be pretty nervous about not having fire.

AH, he's French.....He'll only make it about half way and then give up....... Just kidding, just kiddding.

But seriously...

Looks interesting. It will be hard to get food other than vegetation without fishing supplies, but he could just fashion a spear/gig and some net from natural cordage. Or just bring Bear Grylls and his supplies as a companion.:thumbdn::D

Is that smoke I see coming from a Volcano?

Yes, the island has an active volcano with a history of eruptions before and after the captain of the Bounty landed there after the mutiny (1789). The last eruption I see record of was in 1960. There is a fresh water supply there and a variety of edible nuts, fruits, coconuts and of course seafood. I haven't found a survey of animal life there other than a passing mention of abundant birds. There is also, according to a few sources, an active kava plantation, and the island does receive visitors, in addition to the natives of surrounding islands who farm the kava.

Landing on the rocks of Tofua’s rough coastline involved
more leaping than docking. Our provisions, along with
Heather, an American geologist and Siale, our Tongan
guide, were thrown onto the rocks with us. At last, we had
arrived. The island of Tofua is approximately circular,
with a diameter of 8km. It formed as a huge volcano, the
bulk of which was destroyed by an enormous eruption
some 1000 years ago. This eruption created a large caldera,
which defines the island as it is today. Tofua rises
out of the SW Pacific up to a circular ridge at 500m above
sea-level, and then descends down to a central, geothermally heated, freshwater lake. Within the central crater is a new, active volcanic vent.

Look on page 6 for a few pictures.

Have you guys seen this yet? (if you all have forgive my late coming).

I think its an interesting idea. Look at the knives he is bringing, not really that impressive a pair. I would love to see how he copes with sharpening and care of them, also what he does for food, cordage and everything else.

What do you all think?

How will handle getting hurt without any First Aid Gear??

Fire Making??

Water??

Obtaining food....(Plant and Animal)

Cooking??

Etc...

He is going to need a lot more than just 2 Knives(Machete and SAK) to last that long...
