"Modern" Style Lockback/Slipjoint Knives, with a Caveat

Hello,

I am looking for "Modern" styled lockback or slipjoint knives. What do I mean by "Modern?" I mean handle materials (G10, Aluminum, etc.), higher end steels, pocket clips, and styling more like a frame lock or liner lock.

But here is the caveat, it must be a two hand opening knife. That means no thumbstubs (or at least removable ones) or thumb holes.

A couple examples of what I have found would include the Boker Plus Zero and the Spyderco Pingo and SPY-DK. Any other suggestions for such a knife?

Thanks for any suggestions, God bless you all!

Adam

You really made it hard, didn't you? Cold Steel made the Lone Star and Mackinac hunters with a nail nick and lock back. They also make the Code 4 and you can take the studs off.

Check out the Three Rivers Manufacturing Nomad. I've had mine for a couple of months and it's a very well-made folder. Very comfortable in the hand. It originally came with G10 scales, but I had them replaced with redwood burl by Spketch here on the forums.

This is the only pic I have of it right now. Good luck with your search.

Nice, ps.

I'm presuming on the Three Rivers design that the knife cannot actually be opened one handed? But you are right, it does give the impression that the knife is one hand opening.

I can if I try really hard, but it requires me to shift my grip, re-position my fingers, etc. it's pretty much a two-handed opener.

Thanks EChoil.

What about a CRK Mnandi, that is if a two handed opening frame lock is applicable.

Yep, take a look at the Mnandi, it is a Fantastic piece. I would also see if the CRK Ti-lock fits your needs.

The Boker Plus XS has removeable thumb studs to make it a two handed opener, though to be honest even with the studs it's not easy with one hand. Great knife but a basic blade steel. I love my Pingo and also the Roadie, definitely recommended.

I like the shape of that one quite a bit. While I'd love to get into something with premium materials, it is more likely that I'll wind up with a handful of these cheaper but useful knives and just rotate through them as I see fit.

Davison makes a very nice slip joint and can get modern materials but no lock. A mnandi would be a gentlemanly non threatening two hand opening with a lock.

Look at the Boker Haddock - Well done Bohler 690 steel. Nick opener. Nice g10 and titanium, even some wood models.
