money orders worthless now?

This is really bizarre.

This is basically a checkable deposit... an order for one institution with your money to transfer it to another institution of your choosing.

The Post Office basically has your money, because you gave it to them as a checkable deposit... $100 cash for a $100 MO for example.

Now the Post Office is not willing to honor the order to transfer it back? Not like they don't have the money... you gave it to them PLUS a fee.

Don't get this myself.

im betting lack of training and/or refusal to learn processes.

post office just a hair north of me......wouldnt answer the local phone. just rang and rang. no message no voicemail, nothing. went in there two ladies working the counter said when the boss is off we dont answer the phone. so forwarded? nope they said. they really just didnt care. i wasnt all that surpised.....still better service than my post office.

This was years ago, so my memory might be a bit fuzzy, but I remember cashing a $100-120 USPS MO at the PO. Another time it was a $400 USPS MO, and they were unable to cash it simply because they didn't have $400 in cash. I don't know if that's simply their policy not to have that much cash on hand or because it was in the morning and they hadn't taken in enough money yet.

I went to my credit union, and they had to clear it. But unlike a check that takes a few days, they made a phone call, put it in some scanner thing, and I was good to go. All financial institutions might not have this ability.

I took a money order for a sale on the exchange. I take it to my bank and they won't cash it, they tell me to take it to the post office. I take it to the post office and they won't cash it, they tell me to take it to my bank. So if nobody will cash them then are they worthless? I don't think it is right that the post office will sell them if they won't cash them, maybe it's even criminal.
I was told the same thing, but it included be sure to cash it before 11am because there is no cash left for USPS MO after that time. I wasn't sure what to do, so I deposited the MO in the ATM and the funds showed up in my account the next day.

Not accepting a MO for an exchange sale is an easy way around this, there is a major problem with counterfeit MOs and it's also a very popular way for drug dealers to try to launder cash into something useful, both lead to increased scrutiny and potential for complications.

MOs are as good as cash. Postal money orders I mean. Banks will cash them. Maybe if you don't have an account at the bank then they can refuse.

As far as the counterfeiting aspect, a postal m.o. has certain watermarks and serial numbers that can be verified by any post office and are extremely difficult to reproduce. Can it be done? Probably. Is it such a worry that everyone everywhere who pays with or accepts money orders has to be burned at the stake like some people are implying? Of course not. In many ways, m.o. is better than either cash or personal check.

Did the person cashing it endorse the back? Are we getting the real story? Who knows.

We live in a age of mediocrity. The clerks probably didn't know the correct information or didn't care to give customer support because they are unhappy they are a clerk. I use the KIOSK or atm anytime I can because (saying whatever happened to) "work ethic" has become racist. God forbid you tell someone to do a better job.
Those USPS mo's are the gold standard of mo's. Any clerk that cared would have explained the issue AND sorted it out for you. You do not have to run around town "begging" for their financial instrument to be honored.
There is a war on cash but that is a different issue, I hope.
