Hey all, I'm pretty new to traditionals but after a buddy gifted me a couple of traditional style knives I became very interested quite quickly. My first purchase was a Bose Case swing guard and now I'm looking to pick up a multi-blade, probably a stockman.

I've looked at about a thousand of these in the last few weeks and have pretty much settled on a 4,5 inch Moore Maker. I like big knives and I reckon this one looks very cool and is obviously a serious hard user, what with 1095 and all...

What say ye, is this a good place to start my traditional collection?

Yes! The large Moore Maker stockman is absolutely first-rate. It is one of my favorites. It's big, but those slick, rounded bolsters help it carry like a smaller knife. It doesn't hurt that the thing is absolutely gorgeous. These lame images do not do the knife justice at all. When you get that thing in your hand, there is no mistaking that you are holding a high-quality, "real man's" knife.

If you like a large stockman, it's a great choice.

My buddy gave me a Case 3 5/8 stockman and I dig it a lot. The only things I would like to change is to make it bigger and have the steel be carbon and the blades flat ground. From the look of it, the MM does all three.

I don't know that it is possible to go wrong with a Stockman pattern. While I favor single blade lockers for heavy duty work knives these days, I carried a CASE or Boker stockman back in the 70s and 80s as my only knife before the lockbacks became small enough to pocket clip/carry.

It was the most usable of the traditional patterns for my work, and the larger models are excellent work tools, not just slicers. I have several, and I still use them often. I just like having a Stockman in my pocket.

Good choice on the style and maker. Great looking knife, too!

I am sure you will be happy with your choice.

I had one of those, in the same yellow bone, but traded it away to a fellow forumite. They're great knives, I think you'll love one!

I don't have one of the larger ones, but I have two of the 3 7/8 inch Moore Makers. They are two of my favorite knives. One is always in my EDC rotation.

Way smaller, and still my favorite. The 1095 is nice steel. I like how you can open all three blades with the same thumb.

Excellent knife that large one - and in the top ten of any list that I'd write (a list that would include Sebbiess and Spydies as well as GECs etc)

Trouble is ou are going to have to hunt about to find its equal let alone better it, so your stockman collection might remain small :D:D

I just ordered one of these in yellow jigged bone. Hard to find a lg stockman w/ rounded handles.
How are the factory edges?

The factory edges on mine were excellent. All 3 blades came shaving sharp.

Guys, I'm pretty useless at making up my mind. These are also on the short list. Any thoughts? These are also both over 4 inches. Sorry about the small pics! The green one is a GEC Furtaker Trapper and the brown one is a GEC Stockman.

All these slippy choices are making your brain go squiffy Mark!

I know what's that's like. Lately the PO having been arriving here with little USPS boxes almost daily......... Welcome to the VISA card bill that never ends buddy!:p

Personally I really love my big Moore Maker. Mine is a virtual clone of the one Blues posted. Big, built like a tank and razor sharp out of the box.

You cannot go wrong.

Console yourself with the knowledge that you are on a long and expensive road.................
It ends with you standing in front of the Tony and Reese Bose table at Blade drooling, filling in little white cards, and making deals with the devil for the soul of your first born if your card get's drawn.............:D

You might find the springs on the GEC to be a tad bit stiffer than you would on the Moore Maker. You may or may not like that.
