Moore Maker XL Stockman - good start?

The springs on the #53 cuban stockman are not bad. Perfect actually compared to the Pioneer and Scout trapper models which have stouter springs. I recommend the #53 along with the MM stockman as the top choices.

Yeah, and its all your fault! :p

All these slippy choices are making your brain go squiffy Mark!

I know what's that's like. Lately the PO having been arriving here with little USPS boxes almost daily......... Welcome to the VISA card bill that never ends buddy!:p

Personally I really love my big Moore Maker. Mine is a virtual clone of the one Blues posted. Big, built like a tank and razor sharp out of the box.

You cannot go wrong.

Console yourself with the knowledge that you are on a long and expensive road.................
It ends with you standing in front of the Tony and Reese Bose table at Blade drooling, filling in little white cards, and making deals with the devil for the soul of your first born if your card get's drawn.............:D

I would definitely take the Moore Maker over the GEC #53 pattern. I own three GEC's in that pattern, and while they are nice, I like the large Moore Maker better. It's a superb pattern. If for some reason you don't like the smooth yellow bone, there are a few other options, including stag (if you can find one!).

If you want a stockman thats the same size as the Mooremaker knife, do some looking for the Case 340 pattern. It was part of the Case Classic series, same knife as the MM, made by Queen for Bluegrass Cutlery. The 6340 was offered with 11 different types of bone handles, the 5340 had two different stag handles, and there were a few with pearl and other exotics too.

If you are looking for an equal ender try the Cripple Creek one

Aside from that the Eye 425 (4 1/4") is as sublime a knife as the Moore Maker. Squared bolsters though. There seem to be two types - or maybe just two types of stag - one is less dramatically figured than the other, and hasn't got the same tactile or visual grunt :D :D

Related: the larger Bulldog (Solingen) sowbellies are fine, fine knives

It is a handsome devil, I must admit...;)

I say...get 'em both! :D

Well, Humpster, me oul son, ye done brought this on yer own self, so ye did.

(As did I).:D

My yellow jigged bone Moore XL stockman arrived yesterday AM. As expected, F&F are superb, good snap, and walks and talks very nicely.

Edges were not good at all(again, as expected). A bit of free-hand work brought them up to decent working sharp, but will likely reprofile at least the clip blade. Heck, might just do 'em all.

Carries easily for such a big folder, and I figure it should hold up very well.
All in all, quite pleased with this one.

Hi DITCH. Sounds like a great knife but we'll never know for sure without a picture of it.;) Congratulations. That knife will be a hard worker for sure. Enjoy!!

I was fortunate enough to find this beautiful example of the XL (4-3/8") Moore Maker Stockman #5304 from 1998 in smooth natural bone and 1095 carbon steel.

Like the newer GEC Cubans, this one has the round bolsters and the sheepfoot nail nick on the mark side for right hand access, which I prefer.
#075 of only 100 made, the fit and finish on this one is terrific, except for a blade rub between the sheepfoot and spey blades. Gorgeous anyway! :D

That's a beauty. I have a very similar one. They are great knives.

Nice stock knife, Jeff. I've had the yella version for a while now and I really like that pattern.

nice stockmen there guys! I like the look and size!

the biggest of mine is the #53 cattle, in rancher and baron versions
hope to add more in the future..
