Mooremaker 5300

Well, Steve, you gone and done it now.

I passed up that "toothpick" yesterday but darn if I didn't ask that same vendor to send me a smooth yellow bone 5301 to make up for my indecision and to replace the one that had to be returned in the past.

A little bigger than your little gem but the same bloodline as you know.

Awsome Elliot. The 5301 is probably the standard size medium stockman. Probably the same as my Case 63062. 1/4 inch bigger. Post up some picks when you get it. the 5300 is more of a gents stockman, but I'm not fooled by the size. It's very tight and well built. I can see it performing as well as it's bigger brothers. You have the bigger 4 inch one too don't you?

The only other MM stockman in my arsenal is their large 4 3/8" version. I forget the model number. It's a great knife.

Anyways, back at the 5300. I was looking at a few other stockmans I had and noticed the nail nicks. This one on the shield side the clip and the sheepsfoots nicks are on the front, and on the pile side the spey is exposed, making it for complete right hand opening. Not so on my other stockmans. the sheepsfoot nail nick is on the back.
This is another plus for this knife and something I will look for with others that I will buy in the future. It was never a big deal in the past but I have psoriasis in my left thumbnail and it is kind of hard to open knives with it.

It appears that all the Moore Maker stock knives share that trait (regarding the nick on the sheepfoot).

I recently picked up a brand new 5301 that looks just like yours. I love this knife and have never seen blades ground so thin!

I picked it up at a store in the country that sells sporting goods. It was made in 1995 and I bought it a month ago :D

I am not sure about it, but I think the date on Moore Makers indicates when the pattern was first made for them, and not the manufacture date.

Could be wrong.

Eric.

The nail nicks are the main feature that draw me to the Moore Maker stockmen.

The one I returned was a 2007. It was replaced with a 2008.

I love the smooth bone....really attractive.

Here is my only Mooremaker stockman. Scales have been replaced with ironwood.

A little bolster treatment as well it would appear.

Interesting. The reason I was unsure is that I recently got a 5 blade sowbelly with a date of 1999. Cumberland said he got 12 in at the time and they all sold out fast, as they always do, and they take a long time to fill the orders when he reorders.

I was wondering if that meant they needed to be regularly produced, or if Moore Maker has a bunch stored somewhere and it just takes a long time to resupply, or if there are a lot of 1999 blades that are still being put into knives.

Anyway, I am confused.

I think it depends. I asked Mooremaker and Dave said he was out of 2007's. so he may have different lots.

Eric, they are marked with the year made. But Moore Maker still has some of the older years in stock. The 5Blade is one they have in a couple of years (1999 being one that can be ordered currently).

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the clarification!

I guess I was just surprised that 1999 dated knives were still available in quanitiy.

Eric

I have a couple of Moore Makers as part of my EDC for years now. The honey bone handle stockman is 3 7/8", and the stag stockman is 4 1/4".
