Mora Mania -- Trying Out Some Carbon Blades

Mora knives are ok, but they are not the best knives out there. Inexpensive yes, but I can think of a number of other knives that I would prefer to have with me.
I can afford better, and I buy better.

I do have one stuck inside my BOB though. ;)

Well, I imagine almost all of us would agree with you, especially Guyon! But, if you like to play with knives, it is easy to get a bunch of them to play with, for not much money.

Bingo. See the teeny, tiny knife in this pic (below)? It just didn't fit my hand, and I never used it. So I sold it, and the cash covered all the Moras in this thread plus a Trangia stove set. I'm going to have a lot more fun with all these Moras and the stove than I would with the tiny Busse.

I've been wanting to get a 780. It's cute, and a lot closer to what I make in basic small field knives than most of the mora line.

Nice selection of Mora's you have there, Guyon! I really need to pick one up for my own collection.

Of the two stainless blades I bought, here's a hi-vis 760 I grabbed to put in a kayak dry bag.

Where did you get that one? I've seen the orange-handled 760 listed in a lot of on-line stores, but they where all shown with black sheaths. I'd love to pick up one like that with the matching sheath.

Sold as the 760 Orange Orange, little over half way down the page...

I grabbed one of those from NewGrahamKnives recently and I really like it. It wouldn't be the best knife in the world and I wouldn't use it for chopping or batoning, but I would happily take it camping and use it for food prep and for light duties (carving wood or whatever). I have stropped mine a bit to get a nice sharp edge - sharp enough to whittle hair that is! The carbon steel is really good for taking a crazy sharp edge and for holding that edge reasonably well. It does patina easily (like if you show it something acidic) but that doesn't stop it from cutting well.

I have tried mine out in the kitchen and it works well for food prep work, I like to test things like that at home rather than wait until I am in the wilderness.

For someone starting out getting into bushcraft that doesn't have a lot of money to throw around I would advise them to get a Mora or 2 to use as utility/food prep/light duty knives + something good for chopping & batoning (Kukri, Machete or Axe). I don't think that anyone HAS to spend hundreds - for fifty bucks you could get a chopper of some sort and 2 Mora knives and cover the shipping as well.

To many people the best knife can be as good as it likes - if it costs over $200 they just can't be spending that sort of money. It is good that decent knives are available at a price that pretty much anyone can afford.

Props to Guyon to do this and share with us. I, for one, love my 510! I'm looking forward to read your findings

OK, so I finally broke down and got a Mora, Carbon #1. I really like the feel of it. Handle is a bit toward the short side, but seems like it will work OK. Very nimble and comfortable in about any position you can come up with.

I think the person that put the final bevel on it was on a combination of LSD and meth, though. It looked OK at first, but once I put it to a stone it had a huge "microbevel" and was horribly uneven. It's almost normal now, but my DMT X-coarse has gotten a pretty good workout.

The carbon blade holds an edge longer than the stainless on my Moras. I like my Marttiini as well on maybe a little better than the Moras. Like to hear how you like the fillet knife.

Aside from the Miki, I got all the knives from Ben's Backwoods. ragweedforge is great too though.

It'll probably be a while between reports. The Martiini is in my pack, but right now, I'm distracted with alcohol stoves. :p Use thread tools above and subscribe to the thread if you want to know when it pops back to the top.

I think most moras come with a micro bevel. Mine did anyway. I have my mora zero ground, but am going to put a micro bevel back on my kellam wolverine
