If you could only have one Mora, which steel would it have?

I can't detect the flavor carbon steel supposedly adds to food.

For me it definitely adds a flavour especially to something like slicing an apple, and it's not mild though I can't describe it other than it's the taste of carbon steel....
Using a carbon kitchen knife to cut up food doesn't impart a flavour in a finished dish for me, it has to be something that's cut & then eaten immediately.

Well, I just cut up an apple because of you fellas. I made extra cuts just to see if a taste was imparted. This was with my Svord Peasant in L6 steel.

I left the juice on my knife to give it a patina as I ate each slice. After a few minutes, I picked up the knife and noticed a distinct smell of steel, the same as when you work the blade with a stone. When the juice reacts with the carbon steel, there is an odor. The apple slices I cut in the end did have some aftertaste, while the ones that I cut at the start did not.

Moral of the story, work quickly with a carbon steel knife and your food will taste normal.

Sandvik 14C28N is an impressive steel, Underrated, and under-appreciated
If you were given a full tang knife in Sandvik 14C28N from a good company with a great heat treatment, and told to take it deep into the sticks you'll be in a good position

Shaihulud one of my favourite hard use knife steels, shame it's not as popular as it should be in larger fixed blade knives. Pricey (for what it is) but I'm looking at the Helle Nord which will probably be my next purchase.

They are used plenty for camping in Europe, like Helle, Casstrom, Joker, Manly, Castillo, etc. Though, yes, they are significant more expensive than the same steel manufactured in China (This is why I don't class 14C28N as "budget steel", as China has budget labours to tank the price).

Joker from Spain has some more southern Europe accent design in 14C28N, which is quite interesting.

Yes I've had a good look Deino, Joker the most widely available don't have the style or size I'm looking for (larger). I'd love a blank as I enjoy putting my own handles on and am going to start making leather sheaths (not hard to do).

Carbon for me! I have one stainless, a Precision, for carving. It is good too.

121, 511 Basic, Comp HD and Eldris in carbon, I think T17?

I heard Norrwegians invented high carbon steel by adding their enemies bones to the molten metal, thus adding cabron. It worked, so they kept on, thinking it to be magic. That is metal, in more than one way.

Looks like I miscounted my MORAKNIV collection, as there is 1 Garberg 14c28n, 1 stainless with fire starter/blue grip, 2 stainless in blue and orange grips for steak knives in camping kit, and 1 Carbon blade in tan/black grip.

If I could only keep one it would be the Garberg stainless.

Stainless steel is a beautiful thing

Can confirm. I own a flat ground Ember F, Montanero, and Campero. Joker makes amazing knives. Its basically an LT Wright for 1/3 the price.

I voted 12C27 as it's the best value. For an all-around knife, I want it stainless and don't want to pay the premium for the much heavier Garberg, or deal with the Kansbol's compound grind. I also hate the handles of those two, whereas the lowly Companions fit my hands well.

If I could only have  two Moras, then it would be a 510 backed up with a Spark for food prep and secondary fire starting capability.

By the way, I made dinner using my carbon steel knife tonight. I noticed it left way less aftertaste when it already has a patina.

I would really like if they just switched all current 12c27 to the 14c28n - for me at least - it's been better in every way, a real upgrade for their stainless

lets hope we see a companion in 14c28n soon ;) or even a mora #1 or #2

Would you be willing to pay double for a 14C28 version? Mora seems to have a big markup once you use "premium" steel or the word "bushcraft." I'd stick with the $15 stainless Companion.

I also would like upgraded steel on the rest of the line, but not at the cost Mora would be likely to charge.

How do you figure they have a huge markup for things that say Bushcraft or "premium" steel? I dont see that to be the case at all.

Just checking a popular online seller, Mora Companion stainless = $18, Bushcraft Black = $42, Garberg (14C28) = $82

My Garberg 14c28n was like $55 or something, but still a lot more than the $14 or so that I paid for some of my others.
EDIT - I have not checked current prices, sorry.

Why would they be the same price? A companion stainless is using a much easier, cheaper process to make (especially since they make so damn many and have for many years)..On top of the its significantly less steel than the BB or Garberg.

On top of that both the BB and Garberg have far better finish/fit (I own 6 companions and none are as nice as any of the BB/G). The sheath for the garberg is considerably better as well, and some like myself think the handles on both the BB/G are way better than the companion (which is already good).

What other full tang Swedish Made (14c28n) knife are you getting for less than 60-70 bucks which is what the price typically is for the basic sheath.
