I really wonder : Recycled Stainless Steel for the price of Two Garbergs ..
What are you paying so much money for ? Performance or to be trendy !
So yeah , does the price reflect performance ?

Is that a haiku?
You don't have to buy it.

I have zero interest or intention of buying it !
But I would really like to see a FAIR test in regards to performance , as opposed to OPINION about why the knife "might" be good !
Coughing up for a Garberg was hard enough .. Slowly making my way to testing it .. Did I buy a few knives over Christmas ( Xmas to some ) ?
But I really despise overpriced / underperforming knives - No matter how nice they Look / Feel / or are bolted together !
Need to pay a lot of money - better get a lot of performance !
Cheap knives are allowed to perform poorly , excusing expensive knives for performing poorly ( inexcusable ) Too much like shelling out a Million dollars + to drive a 4cyl Ford ... Rather than a F40 Ferrari .

I get it. Everyone is happy with the mass produced Moras. I am one of them.
So they decide to make some boutique products, and everyone is mad!
Just don't buy them, and Mora will learn their lesson.
I would say comparing these to a Ferrari F40 is a bit of a stretch, but I get your gist.
🤷‍♂️

I wonder if the Scandinavian preference for stick tangs is because of the cold; with that type handle there's no metal to freeze to the hand like there is with full tang knives.

For a $20 something Mora "Recycled steel" is an answer I'm OK with. At the price point they're asking on the new line, I want more details.

much like any other field of man’s endeavour to achieve perfection, the knife world is full of overpriced, and relative to the price, underperforming products. I dare say even a $150 Morakniv is far, far from the extreme end of this spectrum 😉

(And probably it will be less in retail, give it a year or so and we’ll see)

Partly this perhaps, and I would guess also by tradition. Full tangs may have been considered a waste of steel, why on Earth would anyone need that they thought, back in the days when knives were nor intended to be used as crowbars and batoning tools.

Edit: imagine a hundred years ago, only the village idiot would have been manhandling his knife like is done so often today, judging by the available flora of YouTube clips. It’s like seeing someone today driving nails with a smartphone 😀

I don't think it is the recycled steel that is necessarily the price hike. And more just something they do.

It would be more leather case wood handle. Mabye better fit and finish?

Hultafors axes have a budget line and a premium line. And that seems mostly a bit more attention to the same product.

I, for one, support the Swedes, and their consideration for future generations. If you ever have a chance to visit Sweden, take it.

Been there, Norway as well. Family used to own a house on the Danish Baltic coast.

Anyway, nothing wrong with judicious use of resources, don't get me wrong there. This not being the proper place for such discussions, I hope the mods will allow me to briefly expound: The constant stream of eco propaganda has become pervasive and ubiquitous. There is simply no getting away from it anymore, no matter what the product (or service). If you don't like the "f" word, how about eco-Big-Brotherism or somesuch? I could go on but will leave it at that.

Well, stab in the dark here, but they say "hand made", which... if it's really made by a person, might jack up the cost.
Most of their automation is perfected to the point that they can drive cost down insanely low.

Gransfors also uses recycled steel, and I don't see a lot of complaining about them.
If there's a good business case, the product is solid, and it helps to protect the future of iron mongery, Recycled steel doesn't bother me.

I think for the quantity they are making/selling, it doesn't make sense to fully automate the process.
Their Classic knives are 2x the price of their standard offerings because someone needs to fit the handle on the stick tang by hand. I am pretty sure I saw this on one of their "tour" videos.

The "recycled steel" is something they used to advertise their Companion and some budget model for a long time.

Like I said previously, this is merely a catch up to the normal price in the Scandinavian region.

Look up Casstrom, Karesuando, Brisa, Helle, EKA, etc. Every time it is wooden handle, the price skyrocket and the value drop under the ground. The wooden handle is more expensive than every laminated materials like G10 and Micarta or synthetic matierals. Almost all of them use the same Sanvik steels, which are well recycled. Remember, these countries have some of the highest cost of living, having someone to sand the handle naturally increase the cost.

This why Joker, Nieto, and some other from Spain, Portugal and southern Europe are considered "budget" (still quite expensive) compare to Scandinavians.

Edit/Ps: I have there is the Vangedal, iconic Danish scout knife, which are super cheap. However, it is made in Portugal...

That makes sense to me.

Now whether or not a buyer thinks all that hubbub is worth it, that's a different story, but it seems like the price might be rational (from a manufacturing stand point) and the steel might be perfectly acceptable.

I think we've all become so jaded by the low cost, reasonable performance Mora offerings that I'm not sure this is going to pan out for them.

the youtube talking heads are already making videos about it... proof that there's just not enough original content out there.

You get a special license to signal your virtue in saving the planet or whatever. Personally, I'd rather have a known steel.

It's a mystery, but it's recycled! 🌎

I've seen a message from someone in the knife industry who spoke to one of the Mora family who confirmed its 12c27.
