We use to get into Iquitos on a direct out of Miami for 300 bucks. Fawcett went belly up and AeroPeru and AeroContinente took over. Aeroperu went under. Aerocontinente wasn't too bad but then they got caught smuggling drugs on their planes and the State Dept basically shut down any travel on them. Now it's only Lan that flies in there and being the only game in town they jacked the price up to around 400 R/T. Use to we bought that Lima/Iquitos/lima flight for less than a 100 bucks.

Just about all the airlines that fly into Iquitos go bankrupt. I figure one of the days Mike and I will be hiking home since there is no way to drive out.

I may have to save for the 2013 course. How long would it take to drive form Indiana to Peru?:D

We can boat your car around the darien but you still aint gonna get into iquitos in a car ;)

Hmm. I'm pretty sure there are pilots among the Rat Pack? A small plane would probably be too much trouble though.

Yes, we have a tendancy to shoot small planes down coming out of the coca growing Andes region and flying into the low jungle region.

Well I just looked up the price of a plane ticket.

I will be posting up one of my Kidneys in the Exchange section!:D

email me, I've been looking to pick up an extra one of these to go with my others, my original two are starting to get worn out

:D

The first time I looked up flights out of STL, they were around $1400. I looked recently and they were closer to $1k or just under.

Might not be as many couch potatoes around here as we thought since at least a handful have at least looked up flight costs. :D

We've gotten deals into Lima for less than 500 bucks sometimes. Problem is Lan charging so much to get into Iquitos.

What if one flew further south and drove north on the Pan-American Highway ala Tim Cahill? That would one heck of a road trip. Would that be cheaper?

I found some cheaper flights thru another travel site. closer to 1200 but still..... And all the ones I am looking at are for this year so you could probably book earlier for next year and get a better deal.

Nice pics..... I don't have a "bucket list" started but I just got the inspiration to add two things to it.

1. Take an ESEE course.
2. Eat/try piranha.
:D

"What the hell is takin' ya'll so long? I'm ready to go!"

When I canoed and portaged the boundary waters in 2001, there was a guy who had some really nice pair of waterproof oversocks. At the end of the first portage we were wading through “Moose Muck” up to our thighs. Those socks didn’t quite pay for themselves in that application. :D Going to the jungle not willing to get your feet wet is probably the wrong place to be.
