Some of us chose to carry a particular style of knife for use in self defense. I was wondering what some of you choose. Is there a choice in material, color, weight, assisted opening, etc. I have generally carried a plain edge folder, light weight and I seem partial to AUS-8 steel.

But more recently I have carried a Karambit folder. The hawkbill curve in the blade makes cutting a breeze. All one needs to do is pull and the blade works for you. There are many Karambits out there, but also, many are too expensive for some of us. I have found a good light weight model by Mantis Knives (mantisknives.com). It is the MK-3. I like the light weight, the dark black finish keeps the profile dark to easily hide in dark situations, which makes it hard for the attacker to see. The Mantis MK-3 is very affordable. About a third of the cost of some.

What do you use and why?

Honestly, a knife is a terrible device to rely upon for self defense. Any weapon which requires you to get within arms' reach of your adversary is a poor choice in my opinion. If you're not able to carry a firearm for self-defense, I'd recommend pepper spray or a telescoping baton over a knife any day of the week. If you have the time and opportunity to draw a knife, you have the time and opportunity to draw a concealed firearm.

That said, if I were forced into carryiing a knife for self defense, it would be a box cutter, and I would slash at my adversary's eyes.

One thing to remember about self-defense is that knives leave scars, and can leave permanent disability, or death. An impact weapon will mostly bruise, unless you use it on the head/vulnerable areas. There is always the possibility that you may have to explain yourself to law enforcement or a judge and jury. Remember the point about scars..... bruises fade, scars remain. Pepper spray washes away after a few hours with no residual effects.

I carry the CS Ti-Lite. Obviously it's for last resort, only if my life is being threatened (I live in san fransicko). I chose it for the speed (the Wave copy), size, and look. The latter two will hopefully scare off an attacker. It also has protruding quillions, so hopefully it'll help prevent accidental slippage onto the edge.

My last resort tactic is fight.

My 2nd last resort tactic is scare them off.

My #1 tactic is run.

Edit: I thought about a taser before, haha:

Whether or not to rely on a knife for self defense is a matter of training and practice. My choice is a Terzuola M36. It has a 7" double edge CPM154 blade.

have several CRKT M16s and several Ek Cammando #2's.. (yes, that IS how it's spelled, wrong or not)

that Ek blade is not so much defense as combat oriented, but it's a FINE knife, 6" double edged, D-2 & Micarta..

the M16's are about all the folder i can carry without blushing.. and having spares is nice.

My EDC is a Microtech Mini SOCOM Elite Frame Lock. It would have to do if something went really wrong.

Thank God and the governor we have concealed carry here in TX.As said before a knife is lousy for S.D.Bad guys all have guns.Switchblades are illegal to carry here.Stupid ,aint it.

Oops. This is not really a serious question at all; it's just more of the Mantis Knives spam we're being flooded with tonight. I'll move it again, to TGB&U with the rest of the Mantis spam.

Someone call Orkin! We're being overrun by Mantises, or is it Manti? Either way, get some bug spray in here! :D

"Mantis" is Greek, I believe it means "prophet". The plural should be something like "mantides" so the English plural is mantises or mantids.

So the bug is the "preying prophet" then.

Praying prophet, due to the position of mantids' arms, which looks similar to a "prayer" position in humans.;)

Regards,
3G

P.S. Although, mantids certainly do their share of preying as well. They've been known to eat hummingbirds, frogs, and mice, and are quite masterful when they strike.
