More Modified Machetes - Ontario Military

Hey Brian have you tried this grind-mod on any of the Martindale machetes?
I recently acquired a Martindale Golok (from lo ink) and at 5/32 its actually thicker than the Ontarios. I don't know if the regular Martindale machetes are that thick though.
The Golok does however slowly taper as it get nears the tip (about 3/32).
I got my Ontario in the mail today by the way, thanks!
Side by side the Golok and the 12" Ontario are almost exactly the same overall length.
i've played with the Golok a little and i love it so far.
Its easy to sharpen and is very quick in the hand despite its weight.
The Ontario feels good in the hand as well, i can't wait to get a-choppin!

Hopefully next week i will get to try out the Golok and the new Ontario out in the country instead of just in-the-basement! lol!
:D

Oh yeah i got the Golok here

Its the only place i've found that actually has Martindales.

Hey tholiver,

No, I have not, but I would love to get my hands on one of the Martindale Goloks. I really like the overall shape of the thing.

Is the link you sent actual Martindales? It looks like it, but it never mentions the name Martindale, and the sheath has the lo ink logo.

The Golok is a Martindale for sure, the sticker says so and its also engraved on the blade.
I'll check their print catalog and see if they have any more info.
Heres a few pics of my Golok.

Oh man. I NEED one now!!! : ) The thing I like about those is that the handle can be re-shaped real easy, and it would not be too difficult to replace it althogether.

You owe us a report when you get that and the ontario out chopping.

great job on those machetes there. That scandi grind will be handie. Are u smoothing the blanked area just before that to chock up on?

Although i am fairly new to machetes I will give you guys feedback on them for sure!
Heres the scanned info from the catalog.
(Mods if this breaks any rules let me know and i will edit the images out of my post)

Like Fiddleback I have done a couple of Goloks myself. Funny, we did the same mods. I like gaining the extra edge. Only have pics of the last one I did. Jade g-10 scales. BTW , it was a serious user before I got a hold of it.

Also here's a pic of the wifes old machette, I cut it down and reshaped the scales, I keep meaning to put micarta scales on it, but...

Now that is cool guys. Those martindales look like the tang goes all the way through the handle (obviously on Andy's). It does not look like the new ones are that way. It looks like it stops 3/4 the way through. It could just be what it looks like in the picture though.

My Golok is new and is a full width tang that it extends a full 4 inches into the handle.
The tang does not extend the full length but i think it is long enough, it ends about an 1/8th of an inch before the lanyard hole.

So the last 1.25 inches is just wood.
So 4 inches of the 5 and 1/4 inch handle is full width tang.
The tang is also 6/32 ths thick in the handle!

Maybe Fiddleback and Bladefrienzy can measure their Golok tangs so we can compare the new models versus the old?
To my eyes theirs could possibly be the same length but it is hard to tell because they have reshaped the tangs and eliminated the last 1.25 inch overhang to the rear.
But of course i could be wrong on that.
Either way their rehandling jobs turned out nicely!

On my Golok there is a good 1.25 inches between the end of the cutting edge and the beginning of the wood handle.

Lots of space there if you rehandle it to extend the grip further towards the edge.

I like modified machetes. I have a Kabar cutless that I stripped, knocked the shoulder of their hollow grind down a bit, and put a utility convex edge on it. It chops like mad. It's about 12". I just started to mod an ontario mil 18". I cut about 2" off the end, convexed it and put a very slight recurve on the blade. I am going to do the handle next.

Fun to make things your own.

I've got 3 more in the basement that I haven't done anything with yet. No handle on any of them. May already have modded the thing. It wouldn't matter. I reground the shape of the handle and moved it up to where the edge starts. Plenty of room for gripping. Prettyeasy to do a stopped handle too. C'mon Brian, give it a shot!

Ditto for me too, just move the scales forward a bit. Then ground the edge up much closer to the scales. Thanks for the compliments. You could sand a pice of whatever you used for the scales to fill the gap or just move em up like we did.

Really like those Ontario Cutlass machettes. I need to get one and rehandle it.
