under the influence of Bryan's threads, i decided to post some of my own gear.

i won't carry all those knives, but those are my main choices. i feel the soldier(pioneer shown), delica, and 110 are the three essential folders everyone on BF should have.

the ranger assault knife is my main hard use knife. its closest competitor for that position is the dumpster mutt.

new items are the red duct tape, yellow para cord, wire ties, and suunto clipper. in my coat pocket is another section of od 550, a bit longer.

the natural twine is one of my favorite items, very versatile. i use that as often as my knife. mag light has the triple led upgrade. i also had the button switch but that had a rattle to it, twist is better. i recommend the victorinox led, great alternative.

the poncho takes up the most room, but i don't want a cheaper one when i need it. the matches and firesticks have saved the day more than once. cold, wet days.

you can see that it all fits in the $8 CTD proteus copy easily with room to spare for a cup or or something. i like having room to move my hand in the bag.

not shown are larger items: pot, sleeping bag, tarp. i'm thinking of ditching the bag for blankets. i want one of those solo nalgene kits like Bryan's.

Here's the survival stuff.

the adventure medical SOL clipped to a 760. should keep you breathing a couple days. i think it needs some foil. my pack above is not too much to keep on me all the time, and i'd be MUCH more pleased with those items. the swisstool's always on my belt anyway, which should really help compensate. i'd miss my twine and magblock/lighter.

:D good looking kit and mine is similiar except I have a SAK with Red scales Swiss champ, replace the 110 w/RAT3 & mora replaced but KOA Cub bear and the Ranger with DM LE. Great kit very nice  with addition to LM wave .

OH OH OH I have a similiar proteus copy i got from ebay some time ago
it's great for a survival kit, mine is woodland camo, has a LOT inside
surivival kit by BCB, vic hercules, blanket, lights, surv manual etc...

Doug Ritter has a review of the SOL from Adventure Medical on his site Equippedtosurvive.org. The reviewer had poor things to say about it, especially the whistle and container. I might switch it out for either a Pocket Survival Pak from the same company, or a personally made one. Otherwise it looks good.

That looks like a great kit, well organized.
I would add is a large folding saw, like the fiskars, though the saw in the
sak is a good one. Also, a stout needle to go with your jute twine and a small fishing kit,
and a ziploc full of tea bags, instant coffee, hot chocolate and suger and creamer packets. (A must for any kit ;))
The 760 is a great mora, the beefiest of the bunch.
Oh yeah, love the estwing, just got a gransfors sfa and I am drooling over yours.

Looks like a decent kit. Heavy on the blades though, to be expected on this forum.

Add a small pot for boiling and you are set for basics.

yes, i read that review and mine had the hooks his was missing and my whistle is solid. i do agree about the difficulty of packing that bag. i've since made some adjustments, i'll post some updated pics when i can.

the tea bags and hot chocoated are a good idea, and i do have the room. i like the wooden fiskars folding saw too, supposed to have some special tooth pattern that resists binding. i'll pick it up next time i'm at home depot.

i mentioned i won't carry all those, those are what i usually choose from. pot doesn't go in the bag, it's under my sink at the moment. i don't have a specialty mess/cooking kit, but i do find large tomato sauce cans fit almost perfectly around a nalgene.

Slap a wire handle on it and thats all you need.

I don't see why the Soldier, Delica and Buck 110 should be considered essential when there are many alternatives of at least equal quality. I feel the Victorinox Outrider/Rucksak/Farmer are "better" options than the Soldier and Benchmade RSK Mk1 is a "better" alternative to either the Delica and the Buck 110. Everybody has an opinion.

I've never been impressed with the Estwing. I'd much rather carry the smaller and lighter Gransfor Bruks Mini-Hatchet or even the bigger GB Wildlife Hatchet.

An $8 Proteus copy is attractive, but I've got a problem with spending my money on a chinese rip-off of an American design; chinese seem to have zero respect for intellectual property. CTD is filled with those good deals, but I'll pass.

As for your survival "kit", it seems to me that everything is your pack could be considered to be survival equipment. Why have a survival kit inside an equipment bag? Get the Ritter Pocket Survival Pak and put it in your pocket, or better, get the gear and just put it in your pockets as EDC.

$.02 YMMV

What we got here is a Ritterite with a membership card and secrete decoder ring.

He is setting up a medium level kit for wilderness not a pocket kit. The stuff he has in this kit goes well beyond ritters EDC pack. This point is obvious to me at least.

Why put a kit inside your kit? The SOL was designed as a stand-alone kit for folks who had nothing else; it's not a very impressive kit. I started with a Ritter PSP, but now I make my own kit from gear on hand. The gear is distributed throughout my pockets so that it's readily available and not set aside in a pack for a survival emergency. It's gear, use it.

Ritterite?

ouch. i better throw it all out and start from scratch. my feelings are hurt too.

as for the soldier, delica, and buck: it's not about them being the best. they are beakthroughs, milestones in the knife industry. we are knife collectors. maybe i should have been more specific about my use of the word 'essential.'

the estwing is not the best hatchet i've ever had. i did miss my old wetterlings for a while. i've since put it against my belt sander and now it's a monster, i'm confident it will compare well against a gransfors. i do want a gb mini, though.

finally, if i put that bag in my trunk with a tool box and a few other handy items, would i be a fool for having a survival kit in a survival kit with another survival kit in a survival kit? they're all different and i dont see an empty soda can rolling down the street and gasp that someone lost a piece of their survival gear.
