Morel Season

Somebody beat me to my destination, but he missed some.

Went out today and looked but not too sure what area of woods to look for , I looked around some old rotten stumps and logs but came up dry. I also looked around some patches of "May apples" but nothing there either. I thought about looking down around the creek but we have had at least three floods, will that hurt? or help? any ideas?

I would stay out of the areas that were flooded. Right next to the high water mark is sometimes good. Try looking for dead standing elms, with the bark hanging off. When you find one there are often others .Most of the time I have to do a lot of walking to find a good mess.

Found these today just on the deer trails. I'm leaving the honey holes till after ther w/e rains.

Are you able to preserve some for later? That is a huge amount, Mark! I would be happy with enough for one skillet full.

Plan on drying them. Lots of great recipes in a general search on the web for morels. Hate to see them just dry up out on the floor of the woods.

I just went out again and netted another 5 lbs............ Hey mark, how do you dry them????

In the picture you will see that they are actually sitting on a frame stretched with chicken wire covered with window screen.( made by my cleaver Wife) Just put them out in the sun if you have any. We had a few hours of sun yesterday. Placed them in the laundry room overnight with a small fan blowing on them. Seems to be working fine.

I would guess there will be 20 gallons or more ready in a day or two.

We are planning a small pond up in the woods to be done very soon, it might be fun to experiment with watering some spots.

Mark

p.s.. There is such an animal as the "False Morel" I have only seen pictures. Might behoove a smart man to look them up and get familiar

That is true about the false morel. I havent ever found one, but know what to look for.
There are so many different mushroom varieties that I have chose those 2 to memorize.
I can tell w/ a certain degree of certainty what a mushroom is, but I am only positive bout the morel!!

BTW thanks for the dryin tip, let me know how that is workin for ya.

nice links guys.. Thanks for sharin. Lots of differant recipies and preservation techniques

Found just a handful today. Plenty wet here, so that isn't it. Just need some warmer nights in row to really get it going I think.

Mark- it looks like you have them separated by color. Is there a reason for that?

I found two small ones in our yard last evening. (Southwestern PA)

In my part of Missouri, haven't found many yet, I have a few guys at work that between us this spring we haven't found a decent mess of them yet. But i figure anyday they will be jumping. Do any of you have better luck on southern slopes? Pat

Not really. everywhere Ive been findin em have been on moist flat ground.....
Found some more yesterday, Ive got 3 gallon size bags full this week so far. They should be more next week. Looks like today is a good day to go out though. To bad im stuck on the ambulance for 24hrs.......

I just like seeing the numbers of the different types. I plan on keeping records.

Had another two gallons picked yesterday.

Looks like it will be cooling off for us, so this may have been the last of ours unless we get a a few good rains before it warms up again.

Went bowfishing in the backwoods today. Got about 6 carp and about 3-4 lbs of land-fish. It was a good day...
