Most indestructible folder you can think of to take on infantry deployment?

I do not even own any Cold Steel folders, but that was the first thing that came to mind, one of their Triad lock folders. The value to price ratio is hard to beat if you need a folder that is very resistant to abuse. Also, the AUS-8 blades are easy to sharpen in the field. That steel is tougher than many currently popular stainlesses on the market today, and toughness is very good to have in a rough environment. Save the expensive knives for after you come home from deployment.

If you get the Recon 1, you could also get a ZT 350 for a back up. You'd still be under your $300 budget.

I'd probably go with a Cold Steel American Lawman, to be quite honest. I have a lot of knives with fancier mechanisms and better blade steel than the Lawman but I've got to admit that the lawman puts all of them to shame in the toughness department. Plus it's easy to sharpen and pretty cheap compared to some of the other knives listed.

One piece of advice I heard from a guy who worked as a FOO with CSOR and the snipers was that you shouldn't wear extremely expensive watches or knives on tour. The logic being that no matter how rugged or overbuilt you think your watch or knife is, tours can be chaotic as all hell and chances are pretty good you can still wind up losing it or destroying it. In that sense, it seems more logical to buy a moderately priced knife that can effectively do everything a Strider or Hinderer can do but won't break the bank.

Well said, DM! I spent a few years in as an artillery gunner some years ago. In retrospect, there's no way I'd take an expensive folder to the field if I still served. I just used whatever was issued back then (except for a SAK and it sure came in handy) but now as a knife-guy, I'd want something like a RAT 1 or a Cold Steel offering--something tough, affordable, and wouldn't hurt to lose and/or break. A SAK and/or Leatherman tool still wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Now that I own one I'd have to vote for a ZT 300. If I was going to spend some money I'd do the Strider SNG or SMF. I'd pick any of these simply for the extreme durability and the steel that maintains the edge extremely well.

Hey snowcrash, you joined up huh? Congratulations! Thanks for your service and I hope this will be a better job than your last security gig. Way to go dude.

I also see that you moved to TX from Orange County.

Forgive me if I don't remember your screen name, but yes I moved to the Houston area recently, got rid of the silly security job too.

another vote for cold steel but I'd go with the ak-47 over the recon. nice being able to wave it open.

I would go with a Buck CSAR myself if I wanted a folder. Well priced and built like a tank, there are a few different models so be sure you get the one that fits your need.

I took a Buck 110 and Randall #15 when I went (with a few others) and was well served.

I have a mini presidio and while the presidio's are hefty knives, I wouldn't deploy with one. First, the scales chew up pants pockets like no other knive I've seen, plus because of the aggresiveness of them, they are not the fastest deployment out of the pocket as well. Secondly, the axis lock has a lot of moving parts, if both of the omega springs were to break, your're screwed. Not to mention if your going to the sandbox, cleaning it would be a PITA! I love my presidio, but I don't think it's the best knife for such a scenerio.

I would go with Endura sable grind. Light, slim, long blade, and not to expensive... If used properly will handle all the tasks required from a folding knife. Do not actually see anything wrong with it. ;)

I would go with a Recon 1 if i was going out there and wanted a folder, tough enough and easy enough to sharpen and maintain.

Check out the new Grayman "Satu" framelock folder. Super sized and super tough. All you would ever need!

And there is a smaller version called the "DUA".

I have one of each model, and they are very strong.

The sad truth as knife nuts is that your Multi-tool is more important than any knife you take.
If you already have a Leatherman Wave or such, then this tool will also cover all the light slicing & cutting tasks you will need, like cutting Para cord or opening food packages.
Past these tasks, you will need a folder for last ditch self-defense, or to be more realistic, for fun and fondling.
I do army reserve training and service once a year here in Israel, never had to use one of my knives, but I always used my multi-tool….

+1 on the Pohl Force Alpha series. These were carried (perhaps still being carried?) by German soldiers in Afghanistan.
It's so beefy that it even makes my ZT0200 look feeble, which is saying something.
So, as indestructible folders go, check it out.

However, I am not sure that it is the best choice: several people in this and other threads find a multitool more useful for most soldier tasks. I'd consider such a leatherman-like tool together with a light full tang fixed blade, perhaps an Izula 2 or slightly bigger.

If you want a strong lock the Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock kind of puts everything else to shame right now, and they generally use AUS-8 which is reasonably fracture resistant. Most high end knives use more wear resistant steel which will be more prone to snapping in two (unless they put CPM 3V on a folder).

Thank you for your service to our Country.

Best recommendations so far were a MT , go with Leatherman. You will have several very useful tools at your disposal.

Cold Steel - American Lawman, Recon , any of those with the Triad are going to be tough enough for what you will need , AUS8 is a tough steel and will withstand a lot of abuse.

Come back alive.
