Most Over-Rated and Under-Rated Brands of Production Knives

Over rated. Emerson.

Under rated. Can't think of any right off. Most under rated knives are that way for good reason.

Busse and Emerson are not overrated...

If you have owned them, you may understand.

I've owned emersons and i'm pretty sure i just said that they're over-rated (at least in my opinion and apparently a few others).

They're fugly designs with so-so blade steel, thin liner locks, chisel grinds and a hefty price tag.

I know they have a pretty big fan base but i'm really not sure why.

This is why he has a great following...

I guess its an opinion thing. My opinion is that they are not overrated.

Personally I think CR Sebenzas are underrated. Sure, even the "large" Sebenza is only about 3.5" long, looks pretty pedestrian and costs around 400 bucks. It's also true that there are dozens of folders out there that look a lot cooler, are larger and more capable, and cost a lot less.
Still, there are probably very good reasons to pass all those models by and purchase a Sebenza instead....I just can't think of any.

How does being too expensive for the average person make something overrated? I don't see the connection there.

Over rated: Gerber. They may have been good in the 80's but since they have been bought out by fiskars in the 90's, most of their stuff is crap. They seem to be slowly changing that around though. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TELL ME THE DAMN STEEL YOU USE!

Under Rated: Kershaw I guess. At least with the guys I talk to

Overrated: cold steel, had a nasty chip with their kukri when striking a branch no thicker than my arm.

Underrated: .victorinox, A well picked SAK can go a long long way.

Overrated: Mantis
Underrated: Lion Steel

That said, there's not really a single legitimate knife company I really dislike. I like knives, and they all make knives. As for Emerson, I'll just remind everyone that you can get a new CQC-7 for $130. Pretty great value, I'd say.

I'm not sure about over rated as I am pretty brand loyal and am pleased with any high end knife I buy.

Under rates is easy - Kershaw, for the price they cost I would put them against any comparable models on the market yet I don't hear them bragged about quite as much as some other brands that I would never choose over them.

I don't know about over-rated because I don't own any of these "big deal" knives. Offhand it strikes me that an s30v blade with a Ti Framelock should not be $400 in this day and age.

Underrated- Kershaw. Phenominal knives in materials that are, even to my untrained eye, very well machined and put together and work as well as anyone can need them to. I own 2 kershaw folders and will be a repeat customer to this company.
