Most Over-Rated and Under-Rated Brands of Production Knives

Over rated: Strider, Busse, Hinderer. And yes I've owned them and gave them away.

Under Rated: CRKT

in my book the price has alot to do with how i rate an item Dan. Busse knives are not worth what they are asking and getting, in my opinion, Dan.
So i think they are overrated to be getting/asking that price Dan. And laughing all the way to the bank. Do they make a good product absolutely are they worth that heck no. Just like everything is getting in the USA , going to a baseball game is for the rich and famous now. Those baseball players are overrated in my book and that's why it costs a family of 4 $300.00 to see a Seattle Mariners game.

Many here are using the price of a knife as the sole basis of rating a knife.

High price = over rated
Cheap = under rated

IMO a knife should be "rated" on how popular it is and positiive feedback, not the price.

For instance the Buck 110 appears to be a highly rated knife from browsing these forums and it is not a particularly expensive knife wheas the Hinderer XM is also a popular knife and frequently given glowing feedback but due to the high secondary market price many are simply slapping over rated on it.......

Going by your system gas station knives would be the best knives in the world then because they sure sell a ton of them.

A knife model should be able to stand on it's own merit, if it can't then well......

With knives one usually does get what they are paying for believe it or not.

What that means is there are reasons why the prices go up, that could be materials, workmanship, tolerances and or a combination.

That said...

Price will always be a major issue and will always tend to cloud the truth one way or another.

I'm not sure about over rated as I am pretty brand loyal and am pleased with any high end knife I buy.

Under rates is easy - Kershaw, for the price they cost I would put them against any comparable models on the market yet I don't hear them bragged about quite as much as some other brands that I would never choose over them.

If over-rated means the hype, IMO I could say Busses, ESEEs, and Beckers... but still, I would like to add that Basic 9, ESEE 4, and BK2 are still in my wishlist.
but I really agree with Kershaws as the most under-rated brands. Never owned a Kershaw because in my case I do not very often seeing one EDC'ed in this forum or in my country's blades forum. Got one (the Leek) this year because a friend of mine selling it for cheap. Now I really craving for another folders from Kershaws.

Did the Busse LIVE knife performance test mean nothing?? :D
And Jerry will do it again but no one has stepped up.

I believe we have our first case of butthurt.

And it only took 3 pages into the thread. Not bad.

Underrated: This thread.:) Some good reading. I'm still waiting for someone to mention the term "Overrated" on another big fanboi following. I would say it, but I'm afraid someone would let the air out of my tires.:D

Overrated:
ESSE - what a joke a coated blade that cannot throw sparks is marketed as survival knife (ESSE 3 and 6). Jungas and Izulas are good for their purpose though. Moreover, the handles are crude and will blister your hands the steel is not great and prone to rust and does not hold the edge well.
DPX Knives have same issues.

Underrated: small shops like Bark River Knives, Fiddleback Forge Knives, Blind Horse Knives and Koster.

Underrated: Ferhman

Overrated: hinderers secondary market prices are overrated, but at $375 it is and amazing knife!

Over-rated: Big clunky frame lock expensive folders. There is literally no practical use for these and they are dumb. get a fixed blade.

Under-rated: Byrd.

Under-appreciated: The practical Emerson knives. I would be willing to bet 90% of the folks who bash them have never actually owned one and/or actually used one. They aren't supposed to be pretty or fancy and anyone who hates on the the chisel bevel is an incapable idiot.
