Most over-rated production knife brand?

I wish Benchmade would produce a quality knife consistently. Went tonight to buy one with a gift card from the holidays. I looked at 4 different options (a valet, 2 of the g10 mini grips, and a full size g10 grip) and none felt acceptable. The action was stiff on all of them, but that may wear in. Blade centering on all of them was off, just a little on the valet and a lot on the other three, touching the blue liner on one. The valet felt like there was sand on the washers and the axis bar. If the lock was held open, it was ok. When the lock was released and rubbed the blade on opening/shutting it was very gritty. I wanted to come home with one but they felt like they were $50 knives.

I really like the design on half a dozen of their models but I can't find one that feels built properly. The last 4-5 trips all were a disappointment.

I never really liked benchmade at all. Guys at work show off their grips and I just don't get it. I bought a 741 and love it. Wish they made more large size offerings. The axis lock is great. Don't know
about the current qc though. I'll still give em a chance if something catches my eye.

First and foremost, can we all please agree on a benchmark for the term "overrated"? I nominate this particular specimen:D

Krissig12,

That was actually kinda both interesting and entertaining.

Actually looks like some nice design concepts with some Perrin retention influences, combined with a hamaguriba type profile ...

"explosion bonded s30v and titanium" WOW ..., that sounds like a very controlled and repeatable manufacturing process ;-) Must be some serious super steel there (but what do I know ...

The likes of what one might expect from CERN & The Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Interestingly, come to think ..., I have actually done some explosion bonding/welding, and was surprised at the results (both from an ease and repeatability perspective). So, some of my previous tounge-in-cheek comments were perhaps a bit on the ignorant side.

The $3500 price tag though ...,

I do thank you for the post ...

Regards,
