I've had just about every Gerber except for the newest offerings and the only one I still have it the one that people know the least, the Military Tool. Looks like an original Leatherman, about the same size, they didn't sell that well and got dropped quickly. It's made in the USA and I've had it for 11 years. Mostly sits in the drawer now, but I can't part with it. After breaking a few Gerber's (all offshore manufacture) I gave up on them.
Had a SOG Paratool too. It was neat enough and I never had any problems with it. Can't remember why I got rid of it.
I have a Buck Extract in my hunting pack. Neat and simple, with the best knife blade out of the bunch. I think the pliers are close to useless. I do like the sliding screwdriver though.
I have a Kobalt multi tool from Lowe's in the glove box of my work truck. I bought it in a moment of panic when I thought I lost my Leatherman. Not bad for the money really. I could use it with no problem if it was all I had. I think it's better than the Gerber's I've had.
I've had several Leatherman's and I think that they are the best I've used. I've had the original, the Super, a Wave, and currently have the Skeletool. It's not the biggest, or the most versatile, but I can just clip it to my pocket and go. Hate the 420 steel in the knife blade, but the store didn't have any of the 154cpm ones and I was in dire need. I'd just broken another Gerber, LOL.
I'd like to try the Swiss Tool, but I think it's a bit big for me.
I got my first Leatherman when I was 17. I'm 34 now. I have not gone ONE single day since then without a multi-tool of some kind on my person. My buddies used to rag on me a bit about always carrying one. But after getting them (and myself) out of various situations only because I had the tool, within a couple of years, they were true devotees as well.
