Most Underrated Khukuri?

No, the snakes don't carry the hanta virus, but they keep the mice population down a bit. As I understand it, the hanta virus breeds in the urine and dropping from the Deer Mouse. So, if you have to clean out an area, where they have nested , old shed etc, you need to wear a dust mask, etc.

Snakes , in this area , can carry the plague, so if bitten, can pass it on to you thru the bite. Same warnings go for leaving dead rabbits, mice, birds etc alone, should you find them lying about, without evidence of positive kill by some means. Announcements have been made, should you find something like that , contact local authorities.

We had a stupid security guard, that kept pestering a big bull snake, despite the warnings and protest from his sidekick. The bull snake finally had enough and struck, hitting the guard in the arm. Despite medical treatment, it eventually got gangrene and had to have the arm removed. His arm, not the snake.:)

You snake killers; just be careful you aren't doing more harm than good. The chances of your being seriously infected may be less than allowing the vector eating snakes around.

Not everyone is capable of getting huntavirus, or dying from it if they get it.

I'd love it if a bull snake lived here. They say the Big Horn sheep used to graze in the front yard when the house was empty, but that was before, (ironically!) a disease killed most of the herd off. Rattlers are a mile away in the hills/prarrie, but they don't come into the small deep valley for some reason.

The Plague, heh?

I wish I could kill a snake with a sirupati. Maybe someday when I'm out hiking, but it's hard to imagine a scenereo where I MUST defend myself from a rattler. Usually I just walk away from them if I'm out in the sticks. Now, if one was in the yard, different story.

I think the most underrated khuk is the 18" kobra. Mine will do anything a BAS will with a more comfortable handle and a bit more reach.

and occasionally visit the forums on kingsnake.com. I've never heard anyone mention that snakes carry the hanta virus. Snakes have a pretty low birthrate and are slow to sexually mature. In the time that it takes another snake to replace the dead one a handful of rodents could easily become hundreds of rodents. I'd take my chances with the snake.

p.s. Most underrated khuk? Probably one of the 12 inchers.

Worked in a couple of labs while going to college. One was run by a herpetologist & I learned a lot more about snakes than I ever really wanted to know. The biggest problem with non-poisonous snakes, so we were told, was that we could receive some really bad bacterial infections if one bit us......not from bacteria the snake manufactured, but from whatever they had been eating. Since they probably don't floss after every meal, the left-over bits & particles of their last meal remain in between their teeth & many times the bacteria involved are the cause of the infections. King snakes, corn snakes, & etc. are usually pretty docile if you don't provoke them, but the "nothern banded water snake" that we have in Tennessee & Alabama are extremely agressive, & this, mixed with their coloring, make many people think they are actually copper-heads. They will bite every chance they get. Where I was raised, every farmer had a big king snake in the corn-crib; they didn't hurt anybody, & there was never a rat infestation. Its kinda comforting sometimes to see a ring-necked king snake out & around the place....they feed on many poisonous species, as well as mice & rats.

Anything to the gossip that there's now a rattleless rattlesnake around Northern Nevada? Heard that one from the Tribal Chairman long ago.

Also I watched a rattlesnake being fed one time in a terrarium. Live mouse put in and left to run around. Snake ignored it for 5 minutes then struck. I know they have their place, but not around me.

One guy started to head out his front door and found a big one on the door mat. I told him not to worry if it sounded like WW3 starting some day. It would be just me taking care of a rattlesnake.

No rattleless rattlesnake in US. But there are rattlesnakes that do not rattle before striking.
