Mountaineer Pass around has begun

It'll be going out today (Thursday 6/18). I'll post again with a tracking #. Review will be posted shortly, needless to say it's a GREAT knife!

Colin very good I cant wait to see what you got for us. Sounds like you enjoyed it as well. Doug

Ok guys what is happening with the knife? Lazerboy2000 owes a review, cmdr249 is the last one I knew that had the knife. Try to keep things moving along. Doug

My review will be going up Monday afternoon. Sorry, i got bogged down with a summer class exam but it'll be over monday. Can't wait to write it up!

Did cmdr ever confirm he got the knife? Tracking shows up but I haven't heard from him.

I've got it and getting it set to go out tomorrow.

Unfortunately, it fell to me at a bad time and I'm behind on it due to work this past week.

I will finish everything out today and get it shipped tomorrow. I will get my review and pics up as quick as I can.

Apologies for the delay...

A teaser pic before my full post goes up (soon)...

55 pics to sort through... :D

Alright FINALLY here's my review! Sorry most of the pics turned out blurry.

My first reaction when I opened this knife from the mail, and held it for the 1st time (in the USPS parking lot since I was so excited) was that it is a solid and very well built knife. All the grinds were perfect and the handle just seemed to melt into my hand. It was pretty well balanced with the balance point around my pointer finger.

Here are just a few comparison shots with my other fixed blades. RAT RC-4, Mora 2010, DPKnives Woodman w/ leopard wood scales. Unfortunately I don't have any detailed specs, but I reckon Doug could post those if need be.

Here's a spine shot. The RC-4 is 3/16 (.187) thick for reference. I really liked the spine filing on the Mountaineer as it gave it a really great look. Note that there isn't any thumb jimping...normally I like a bit of jimping for texture, but the handle was solid enough that I didn't really feel for extra grip. As I said before, the handle was very comfortable for my large hands.

Just a quick shot showing blade lengths.

The sheath was really nice and fit the knife very securely. It had a belt loop on the backside big enough to fit most belts. The bottom sheath was made by Ilbruche.

This pic shows the concealex? sheath that he made for my Woodsman. Also very well made and fits securely.

Alright now's where the fun really begins! Unfortunately the weather was bad so I wasn't able to go outside. I took these shots in the garage and was careful not to hit any concrete while batoning!

The wood was pretty well seasoned and some of it was a bit tough to get through. The knife itself performed very well and took a lot of abuse.

At the end of splitting a few logs, I made some fuzzies and this knife performed excellently! It was still very sharp and the even though its a long blade, i was able to maintain lots of control by using two hands. This shot also shows the great finish he put on the blade.

Finally I cut up some a cantelope and it cut with amazing ease. The big blade and added weight really helped slice through it but again control was never lost.

All and all it was an excellent knife and I really wish I got to spend some more time with it! I never got any hotspots from using it and couldn't find any flaws. Thanks again Doug for a great knife and letting us have a passaround!

lazerboy2000 Too bad you did not get to get out and play with it more, but it looks like you did good with it. Nice write up. Thanks Doug

I now have the knife. I honestly don't know how much I will be able to use it. I work all weekend and with the holiday and stuff I have a bit going on. We are bowfishing tomorrow night, and I would take it but I don't know if you guys know what fish blood and slime does to the finish on a knife. Plus it would smell pretty bad. We will see if I get time to use it though.

Its on its way to Rockywolf! I didn't get to use it but it is a very nice design. I thought it looked kind of funny at first, but as soon as I held it I knew it would do great for just about any task you could ask a knife like this to do. Wish I could have gotten out into the woods with it. Actually I wish I could have gotten out into the woods period lately.

shadowwalker590 Thanks for the post. I wish you could have got to use it as well. Doug

I received it today. I like it! I just gave another of Dougs knives away today to my son's friend. His first quality knife. I'm taking him under my wing and planning to teach him the few skills I have. At least he is starting with a DP!
This one will see some use over the next few days.

That away rocky. I just gave the Purple Heart SGK I had for sale to my 9 year old granddaughter along with a SAK last weekend. I am getting her started as well. Cant wait to see your stuff with this one. Doug

Ok here we go. I wanted to do something a bit different for my review, so I biked to a local park, made some hot cider and took a few pics. No one was in the park, absolutely no one besides me. So I took advantage of that fact and shot a couple goofy pics I never would have taken otherwise.

My initial reaction of the knife was "wow", it is light for being such a big knife. I dig the filework too. The blade wasn't super sharp when it arrived, but no big deal. My one gripe is the inside of the sheath is cut and I had a hard time sliding the knife back inside. It kept getting hung up. A minor annoyance, but still bugged me. The second thing I don't like is how little the handle is revealed from the sheath. My own preference is to have about another inch of handle to grab onto for ease of removal and replacement.

Ok enough nitpicking, the knife is well made as is the sheath, which is what I expect from Doug. I already own 2 of his knives and was part of his other passaround last year. (I believe TonyM owns those knives, correct?).

This is my absolute favorite handle shape of any of Doug's knives. The flair at the butt keeps the handle secure in hand and allows for better chopping. The shape is filling to the hand and allows for different grips. The integral guard keeps fingers safe. The cutting edge comes all the way down to the handle.

I would prefer this knife with 2 inches less blade, drop point (or spear) and exactly the same handle, and maybe in a scandi. :D

Pics are of the kit I bring when biking, the playground/campground nearby, and the branch I chopped with the knife. Pay no attention to the purple dinosaur, he wasn't a threat at all.
