Moved from General Knife Discussion: Gil Hibben is selling his latest Rambo knife.

That is ridiculous. $1,250 for a belt-sanded leafspring.
Someone tell that dude who bought the Bear Grylls knife for $650...

nice but for $12.50 not $1250.

Hah! Yeah, $1250 for that is even worse than $675 for the Bear Grylls knife. Please, somebody buy one so I can feel better! Rambo could have just gone into town and bought a cheap machete.

And what's with the sheath??
It lets the point hang out the bottom. I'm sure the official answer has something to do with water drainage but thats got emergency-room written all over it.

what person who is smart enough to have 1250 dollars to spare is dumb enough to spend it on a rambo knife? This to me is like the riddle of the sphinx.

time for me to go to the shop for a few hours and make a 1250 buck knife... lets see where did i put that grip tape?

Brother Forumites relax! This knife is made for Hollywood and their ilk. At that price, they'll buy all 100 of them!

Remember, this knife is designed to be sold to egotistical, immoralistic "Gods" who pay millions of dollars for chintzy little 10,000 square foot homes and have the time and self-importance to hate their country, themselves, and everything else!! This is one prized possession they'll love!

(I have this terrible vision of Alec Baldwin weilding this thing while threatening to punish his daughter)

wow, I can't believe they didn't just use the woodsman's pal instead of that:

At least some of the proceeds would have gone towards Vets. I'm not a Vet, but I sure do have a lot of respect and gratitude for those of you who are. I'd have paid to see that movie if they used the woodsman's pal instead of that over-priced junk. EDIT: Removed derogatory sentence in hindsight. Just because I don't like it doesn't give me the right to bash anyone who does. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Now that's what I call waste of money. And to top it off, it's a huge blade made out of D2 and practically without a point. I'm not sure I could do worse if I tried. :D

Geez....

Yesterday I spent about 2 hours modding my old Ontario machete , cleaning up the blade , took original handle off to replace with wood and I modded the tip.
It looks almost exactly like the one in that pic , how embarrassing.:p

The Gil Hibben knives always cost more; he is a very well-known knifemaker even outside of the typical knife collector circles. He's done a very good job at marketing himself, his name, and his knives.

I'm sure the Made-In-China production models will be much less expensive, and available at Mall Ninja Knife Stores everywhere.

Regarding the actual knife design, it's not much to look at. And yeah, that's a ridiculous sheath.

Maybe the knife design origin is worked into the movie plot somehow? Like this:

A native boy is forced to throw out a United Rambo III knife, because of his father's anti-communist political beliefs. John Rambo finds it in the dumpster and hammers and grinds it into a new knife. Now he needs a sheath, but the only thing he can find quickly is a Tromontina machete sheath that someone has discarded because a dog ate the end of it...

The Rambo IV sheath is retro fitted from the Rambo III sheath, according to the movie. I own #4/100 of the Rambo IV knife and I don't care if it were made of aluminum; it will never see the outside of a glass case. It would have been completely stupid to see Rambo forging a piece of steel in the jungle and then cut to a scene of him holding a mirror polished work of art. The knife FITS the context!!

well randy6679 i guess you are the answer to my riddle of the sphinx, did you know they are offering a Bear Grylls knife for a mere 700 dollars?

Gil is a close friend and I have followed the development of this knife for over a year. You have no idea how much time and work has gone into it. Gil made several different designs and a couple of dozen prototypes before they arrived at the final knife.

The bottom line is that Gil made what the customer wanted. The knife, and the forging of the knife, is an intregral part of the movies script as is the sheath.

As for the price, collectables are worth what collectors are willing to pay. If Gil sold it for $500 it would be selling the next day on Ebay for $1250 or more. Why shouldn't Gil get the money instead of they guys who flip it for a profit?

There will be a feature article about the knife in the next issue of Blade Magazine. Maybe if you read it you will have a little better understanding of the process and the reasons for the knife being what it is.

Please. I can see asking $1250 for something with actual design innovation, i.e. grindlines, handle and hilt, fit and finish, etc. But a nasty looking punchpressed slab with a hockey-tape handle? That takes gall.
