Movie knife data base...

In my opinion (FWIW) the database is a nice idea and the project could see the light in short time, but experience (sadly) tells me that this is precisely not the forum to come and ask for that because of certain sarcasm, criticism and will to bash of some people here.
Every week threads from newcomers (or anyone, really) are trashed away by these very people who really don't want to contribute to anything rather than their own self-boosting and pride, moving to W&C ASAP after the thread is closed or simply derail to absurdness and rude remarks.

I recommend OP that you search elsewhere or find another forum/place to keep up and work on this project, in which I'd gladly participate, but away from bad influences and the kind of things this beautiful forum is known for, and discussed about everywhere else on the net.
Awesome place, you say, but not for this.

What exactly happens when you use the ignore feature?
Does it block you from seeing that members posts?

It hides their posts, but you have a button at the bottom that let's you see them. I use it frequently. I mostly ignore just to hide certain listings in the Exchange.

Yep, at least that was the result when I have used it in the past. Use it w/ caution tho, as using it can easily lead to conversations being misunderstood and taken out of context due to the inability to read everyone's responses. ;)

Sorry to sidetrack...
Then the solution is simple. Start a thread on whom to ignore...;)
Not really the right place for it, but this is excellent advice. If you find yourself irritated by certain members there are several appropriate ways to deal with it. Derailing a thread in GKD with personal attacks and such is both less productive and appropriate. :)

The first point is easy enough once you compile that data. The second point is the interesting one, and machine learning has come a very long way. You can easily train an algorithm to spot the knife in a picture. The tricky part would be getting enough detail to sub-categorize make and model. Would make for a neat side project!

Yes - content-based image retrieval still has a long way to go, part of the reason why the system would return lots of pictures of wolves when given a picture of a husky.

Oh pleeeese! Don't any of you certain people EVER make sarcastic remarks about annoying people in your conversations? I'll grant that more than a mention or two is carrying it too far but, COME ON, most of us are grown ups here and a little razzing of known annoying people is not (IMO) a terrible thing if not overdone. Lighten up (apologies if I have misunderstood). ;) More on topic, I agree with both philosophies; BF is the place to discuss it with people who are a community but it wouldn't hurt anything if some wanted to contribute to a database (it is, after all, their right to do so). THERE, a fence well straddled. :D

I think this comment is on topic, and in my opinion "fair"... Knife people are a very small community.

Everyone owns lots of knives but very few discuss them. Especially compared to gun nutz. There are by FAR less gun owners (every house has a knife drawer) but they (gun people) are way more vocal.
The WIKI for guns vs. knives proves this out.

"I" believe it is the "creep" factor. Knives are scary as hell, and most people stay far away from carry knives, and the people that carry them.
For instance... A hitchhiker with an open carry pistol. A hitchhiker with an open carry machete.
Personally, I'd pick up the one w/ the gun before I'd stop for the knife guy.

Knives are just creepy... Bad rep.

I do like the OP's idea about asking for volunteers from the forum. Where the heck else would you go for such help? The Betty Crocker baking forum?

Knives are creepy? That seems like an odd description to me. I don't think I know anyone at all who thinks of a pocket knife as creepy.

Maybe knives are depicted in some movies as creepy, I guess. Creepy just seems an odd word to describe a knife. If we had an Internet movie knives database, would the knife get a creepiness rating?

I use to have my own "database" saved on photobucket with around 145 different movie knives identified (and sorted by movie title) but I deleted everything when PB went all mickey mouse capatalist on us...

I know people who are just plain terrified of knives. Most are in different though. Maybe that's the creepiness factor.

A database for movie knives is such a great idea, but the problem is that there are many many movies where a knife just makes a flash appearance.
Us who love knives still care about even these, but since they're harder to identify and most people probably only really care about " hero knives " such as the Buck 119 and 120 in the scream franchise or Lamson in Halloween a lot would get left out.
It would be great, but we'd have to be the ones to do it to be satisfied with its content.

Creepy-ness rating? Hmmmm
Something like Rotten Tomatoes?

Here's something to think about that backs my point.
On almost all the knife reviews or photo posts you see a fella with at LEAST one bandaid on his hands.
You NEVER see gun reviewers all plugged up with tampons. o_O

... I've seen the crap they've put you thru as well. Why trolls like Planterz, marcinek, Insipid Moniker, craytab and the rest of their pathetic pack of cronies are allowed to remain here boggles the mind...

What, don't I get at least an honorable mention?

I'm not against the idea of a movie Knife database, but if it is to be created and maintained by members of bladeforums, shouldn't it be on the website that the members originally belong to? As it has been pointed out, the attempt has been made previously for similar threads. I think a more up-to-date and complete version would be very cool, and a useful resource for members. However, added value would most certainly come from the conversations that would inevitably take place within such a thread. I do not think that added value of those conversations should be discounted.

I jut want to know what knife the Native American guy had in Predator.
