Anyone know of any hammer ins or happenings around Austin? Looks like me and the family are heading that way. Plan to attend the Moran school while we are living there. I guess this means cheap S&H from texas knife supply hehe. Not looking forward to moving my workbench and tools though.

goto www.stoutknives.com and contact johnny stout. great guy. hosts hammerins. i can get ahold of my uncle from just north of austin and ask him about shows and whatnot. hes a blacksmith and master electrician. if you need an electrician hes the man you need to goto. hes great at his job. since your going to be living in austin your going to have to come out here and see my small setup. i can also take yall around san antonio since its only an hour to hour and a half away. if you need to find something in san antonio i can show you howto get there since i grew up there and understand the city roads pretty well. i can show you a few places in austin too. if you and the family want to see an old pioneer farm and how it operates and such look up pioneer farms. great place. im not sure if they still do it but if you child is under the age of 13 and wants to attend the daycamp they have talk to the people at pioneer farms about it. its a great learning experience. i did it for 6 years as a child. if you need a hand setting up your shop once you get to austin let me know and ill come up there and give you a hand. only charge would be a thanks (i know im cheap). good luck with the move. when are yall moving?

I spent a little time around San Antonio. I hear there is an annual hammer-in not too far from there. I know there is an ABANA chapter in that neighborhood - Balcones forge (don't think that is spelled right). There is also a farrier supply that carries some blacksmithing supplies somewhere close (or there was when I was there), sorry don't remember exactly where or the name.

Hey BigJim, If you like to do any fishing or hunting, you'll have a lot of options in central Texas. I was only there for a few years, but enjoyed it and miss it.
Have a safe move, Craig

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to the change in temp. We will probably move towards the end of summer to save up some change and wrap up our afairs here. I think we may drive down so we dont have to buy everything all over again. I'll have to look up Bandera on mapquest. Look forward to getting to know a new state. Look forward to meeting all you Texas knife makers. I love to hunt and fish. Texas may be beautifull but I have never been anywhere that matches Alaska. I will miss how vast the outdoors are up here. You can be so far away from the city its great. I trust Texas will wow me none the less. I look forward to varmint hunting since we dont really have many up here. Time to get a black rifle in ruger 204, hehe. I'm about to start looking up knife laws, fish and game info ect. I also rode horses growing up in WA and would like to go ridding again. I always felt bad for any horse who had to live in Alaska. They are well taken care of, dont get me wrong. It just bever seemed right lol.

Big Jim, the Balcones Forge is a really good club. We meet in Marble Falls and several other places. It's not really knife related though, but they are certianly welcome. BF centers more around blacksmithing in general. I think you'll really like it. Also the Austn Community College has a blacksmithing program run by a real good smith by the name of Bill Bastas. I wish I was closer (I'm in Uvalde, about 3.5 hrs. from Austin) and I'd take the course.
Over Houston way you have HABA, Houston Area Blacksmith Association, and it's another really good group. Then there's the North Texas Blacksmith Assn., in the Ft. Worth area, and it's good also.
I think you'll find plenty of activities to keep you polished up. Blacksmithing relates to knifemaking is several respects. Welcome to Texas by the way. If you ever get to Uvalde, look me up.

just dont get caught. lol. you can wear one if your going hunting or its a work knife. i used to wear a boot dagger all the time that was double edged. as long as you dont give the cops a reason to search your vehicle on a moving violation they wont say anything. out here i have warn a fixed blade on my side and cops didnt care. it all depends on where you are at and the cop you see.

also BigJimSlade check your email.

Did I just read correct that all double edged knives are illegal to carry in Texas?

Yes. They are defined as daggers and are thus covered by the Unlawful Carrying of Weapons statute. Not getting caught is not the same as something being legal as im sure you know. It is a defense to prosecution that you are hunting or traveling to from such. No such defense for 'working'.

Sad when such archaic laws stick around. Still I never really carry a double edge knife anyways. Just the principle of the matter. I would hope false edges are not misconstrued as making something a dagger. Now that I think about daggers and Texas, I bet I could go boar hunting with a knife. Hmmmmmm... I think I'd go with a nice double edge slim bowie shape.

well there are plenty of places out here to do that. you could even set a trap in my yard and you will get a few. you can go hunting with your car at night. just hit the deer with the truck and then load it up. HEHEHEHEHEHE i never hit a deer til i moved to bandera. your going to love it. just make sure you buy alot of tshirts and shorts until you get used to the heat.

I've hit dear in Washington state. Not fun. >< Hitting a moose is often fatal. They have huge barrel bodies with long stick legs. When you hit them you take out there support and there torso comes through your windshield. All in all, if it has to be one I'll hit the deer lol. What I will really miss is the outhouse races! I'm pretty shure I will have a redneck tan in no time. I used to live on trhe beach in San Diego for a bit but the ocean breeze kept the swelttering heat away. I bet running a forge mid summer down there heats things up pretty well. I'll be the guy passed out in the corner of the hammer in laying under the swamp cooler!

well until you get used to the heat be sure to stay in air conditioning. ive lived in texas so long that i took the ac out of my car and just run with the windows down. one thing you should do when you get here is flush your radiator and just go 50/50. ill find out soon enough about running the forge out here. in texas its almost summer most of the year. are you going to be coming down before the move so that you can take a look around?

Any bowie, dirk, dagger double edge, or like knife. Thats Fed. for all fifty states. Looking forward to you being Texas. I may very well be teaching a class at this years hammer in. There are no restirctions in Alaska about double edge blades. I dont think there can be fedral laws about local carry, only about cross state shipping and such. Right?
I gota get a hold of stout soon! :D
Nice Bowies BTW, Droolin on my keyboard
