Mtn Lion Attack in Orange County

Shoot the d*mn lions! I feel sorry for the folks that live in danger of an attack, and for the victims, unless they were the numbskulls that have been the protecting the lions. I agree, stay out of the danger zones, or carry enough firepower and a backup blade to defend yourself. I have a brother in Kern County that hunts quite often near his home. He sees cougers on many of his trips, but, no go on the shoot. He also carries enough firepower while on his frequent fishing trips, also. While hiking in lion country and not wanting to carry a firearm, how about one of those fokos to hike with? The multi-chore head has been used for years to fend off animals.

Allowing the hunting of the lions makes sense. Or at least the hunting of them during certain months of the year.

Take for example...

Have you noticed that deer are fearless when in a national park? But have you noticed that deer are scared of humans and cars when you're in an area that has seasons for deer hunting?

Now replace "deer" with "lion" and the same results should prevail.

As far as handguns go, its better to be caught with it then without it. If you could hunt the lions, they would probably stay clear of people. You can't hunt bears in western Maryland because of urban voters in eastern Maryland that are not having bear problems. There is a saying "shoot it, bury it, and forget about it". If your not prepared, you could be food. Sad but true.:(

Here is some info according to an article in the local paper: Mark Reynolds, an amateur mtn bike racer, probably crouched down to fix his bike, which probably spurred the lion to attack. He was disemboweled by the cat and dragged off and partially buried. The cougar was protecting his prey, and attacked Anne Hjelle, an ex-Marine who works as a fitness instructor. Two sheriff's deputies shot and killed the lion on Thursday Jan 8th after trackers in helicopters using infrared scopes spotted the cat stalking deputies. The park has been closed, and for now the deputies will shoot any lions they encounter. A 70 lb. female cat was hit by a car not far away. Wildlife experts estimate there are about 6 lions in the Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park area, and between 4000 and 6000 in all of California.

There have been only 5 people killed by mtn lions in California in the last 100 years. The last attack was in 1994. In nearly all the lion mauling cases, the person was alone.

Of course, who knows how many other attacks have been narrowly averted. This last summer Yosemite NP rangers killed two lions in Curry Village in Yosemite Valley after they were observed stalking people. That is a heavily populated area, not the secluded location that lions normally prefer.
