Mule Team Aogami Super Blue pics

Yes, the Caly regular or in large ( 3.5) would really play to the blue steels strengths with a thin blade and a nice shape for slicing.

Maybe we would find out what comes after shaving hairs and slicing toilet paper. :)

If I get my hands on one I will see how sharp I can get it. :D

Thanks KMN and Sal, this has been one of the steels I've been waiting on its just come at the wrong time :( hopefully I'll have some extra cash to pick one of these up before their gone.

If you miss it for whatever reason there are still other options to try out this steel. "Chef's Knives To Go" (and "Paul's Finest" in Canada) carry Moritaka kitchen knives made of Blue Super and Blue #2 at VERY good prices. Blue #2 is similar to Blue Super but is a more pure carbon steel in that it doesn't contain molybdenum or vanadium. These elements in the Super add toughness and protection from chippng or cracking. A friend of mine has a Moritaka 210 mm gyuto made with Blue Super ($145). It is a fabulous knife that sharpens up like a dream, especially since it's so thin. The Blue #2 version of the same knife is only about $110. Shorter 185mm gyutos are even cheaper. Using it every day in the kitchen is an excellent alternative option to really get to know this steel.

I'd be all over a Super Blue Caly 3.5.

the 3.5 has become my go to EDC since its introduction.

Did you have a Caly 3 before the 3.5 was released? I'm wondering if there's enough difference in feel or whatever else to justify me picking up a 3.5 when the 3 is serving me just fine. But if the 3.5 is served up in a Super Blue sprint run, there'll be no discussion, no justifications... just BUY!:D

To me there was a difference, although it may be all in my head.

I had two Caly 3s a SE and the CF in Zdp, I've also carried 3 different UKPK on the same frame.

The Caly 3.5 feels like it rides just a mite slimmer and longer in pocket to feel more secure. And that skosh more feels just a bit more comfy in hand.

Bring on the Super Blue!

I've gotten slabs of royal blue G-10 to make scales and a friend who'll make a blue kydex sheath for me.

I'll take pics when it's done ~ ; -)

Seems like we are missing the obvious opportunity for a Lum Chinese in Super Blue. Or maybe that could be next? :D

caly-blue steel, this would be a grail EDC for me, more so if it had that peel ply CF.

Regarding the clad, as KMN said, steels are often clad to reduce cost and offer corrosion or brittleness protection where applicable.

One of our upcoming Mule Team's is a high Cobalt special made by Takefu and it's going to be clad.

We'll generally go with what the maker can get and work with. Getting some of these steels has been a challenge. We generally want smaller quantities to make a Mule run and it's less than they like to sell. It's been a "Spyderco who" wants what?

It's getting better lately as some of the foundries have heard of our Mule Team project and they are beginning to offer smaller quantities. My sales pitch is that we'll get their steel out into the market where it may catch the eye of potential customers. Now the problem is too many steels and at 4 per year, it could take many years to get the particular steel someone might want. That's why many of the new steels will be offered in knives as well as Mule Teams.

As far as the Caly 3.5, that was aimed at the Mastiff. He's been a fellow steel-head for many years. We have similar tastes in daily carry knives. I carry a Caly 3.5 a fair amount. It's a good size, ergonomic and easy to carry. I would personally like one in Super Blue.

Murray Carter first turned me on to Super Blue many years ago and I've been itching for a reason to try some in a carry knife.

Hitachi has always been exceptional in their blade steels and Super blue is right in there. It's a "nice" steel. Gets very sharp, like 52100. Feels kinda "old school".

Slightly thicker, say, 3 micron, DLC coated Clay 3.5 with a Scan grind. Fully covered DLC, with one side resharpening instruction to take advantage of "self re-sharpening" effect.

Super Blue+DLC+Scan grind+self sharpening. Let your competitors follow you!
