Mule Team Updates

The MT5 arrived and looks great. It's slightly thicker and the cutting edge is a little course, but a few strokes on the Spydie stiks have it shaving sharp.

Now to start using it and see how well the cutting edge holds up it's 4 brothers ~;-)

One of my two arrived and I could tell someone had been playing with it. It is full of fingerprints, and has hairs on it where someone had tested it on their arm.

I think I'll leave it like that in case I ever need to leave evidence at a crime scene. Heh Heh Heh.... :)

"There for I am".

Come on Mr. Bateman. Lighten up :) You might enjoy your time here.

I had heard that Halpern Titanium was machining G-10 handles for the Mules. Might be a simple and inexpensive way to get them into the field? Not as pretty or exotic as some of the custom guys here can do.

Hey Joe,

Did they come from us with fingerprints and hair?

We're thinking of using the 9Cr18Mo as an improved steel for the Chinese models. Makers are sometimes frustrated at our "push the envelope" attitude.

(Assuming the maker will still work with the stuff after making the Mule Team?)

Most of the Chinese makers are reluctant as it is new and difficult to work with. Grinding and heat treat is challenging as can be seen by the scratches and warping experienced.

Beat hell out of them and let us know your thoughts.

Sal said he could get some super blue, but the minimum order has to be more than what he needs for a mule team run.

Hitachi said they'd sell us some and ship it to Golden for manufacture. We're open, if you're interested. Lead time is almost a year, plus shipping and mfg time has us up to 14-15 months. The cost is high and as mentioned, minimum quantity is higher than we'd need just for a Mule run, so we'd have to make something else as well.

Thoughts?

If it is laminated (with stainless steel, obviously), you can put it in any folder design.

If it is not, however, a fixed blade (4-6" blade length) might be better idea, provided it won't have a plastic sheath... :)
(It is not that quick rusting, but some might not like the visual appearance in "hard to clean" parts of the blade of a folder.)

I would LOVE to own a Mule in Hitachi Blue. But 15 months is a long wait, we would need to be fed in-between Mules in the meantime. There is a lot of hype surrounding AEB-L/13C26 at higher hardness levels like 62 rc. This steel is cheap and available, a Mule would be interesting.

Super Blue was in my top three when the Mule concept was being discussed, I am all for it. It would need a Military sprint to eat up the rest, of course.

Sal, Yes it came from the SFO with the hair on it. It wasn't a problem, I thought it was funny actually. You should see my bare forearms from testing my blades when I'm sharpening. My son told me I look like I have mange.

Sal, I'd side with Hardheart on wanting a folder in Super Blue. That kind of thing is lacking on the market right now. It's either D2, or Stainless knives in one hand opening. The Blue steels are really great, and would be fine for edc as long as they aren't run at RC64 levels like some of the chefs knives that can get a bit brittle. Hold the RC down to RC60 or below and it's a better 1095, or W1 IMO. I'd sure love something like that in a good sized one hand opener.

It may be a "TEAM" for you... but I got so many mine are a "family"....
A "Mule Family"........

Of course, I know there last name is "TEAM"........ :D ;)

Mine fight with each other to be used, they are definitely not a family :D

The 52100 was run at 62 so I would imagine that the Blue would like something similar. I don't want brittle, but I do want the steel to be pushed as high as it can go w/o being chippy.

Sal,

I'll second the Super Blue Mule initiative, and we will definitely need a Military Sprint in SB, to eat up the rest of the left over steel.

On the mule I agree, but on something like a hard use folder sending something out that will chip like SB can do around RC64or so and that's asking for more complaints. Normally I'm always asking for Sal to push the steels ever higher but look where that went with the ZDP mule. Something designed for hard use would likely benefit from a lower hardness, depending on the steel and it's curve, of course. A2 at RC60 being an example of an exception. Joe

I'll second some of the extra

in a sprint para or military.
