I know items designed for their specific function are best, ie: a knife for cutting, axe for chopping etc, but I'm always on the lookout for multi-function survival equipment.
Anyway I just came across this hybrid and wondered what your thoughts were.....

Any idea on what the relative dimensions are?

I know I've seen similar niche products on the market but I've never used them. Looks like it might be comfy to choke up on ala the ulu. The only problem I see is that it might not do much else that an ulu or good hatchet couldn't do. That isn't likely to work well as a simple knife or carver, etc. It might be good for camp kitchen work.

I think I'd still prefer my Fiskars or bowie.

how much did it go for? im getting pretty interested in this tool, cool sleek design and multi uses are pulling me in. i went to the site and saw the paramedic axe and the one in the picture above seems like a smaller version. im not sure if i like ht smaller or larger one, but the price is kinda high for the paramedic axe

Judging by the position of the blade in relation to the handle that looks to be a poor chopper. You lose lots of mechanical energy since the blade is almost ahead of the handle.

It is an interesting design, but I'd rather have a simple hatchet and be able to cut, chop, baton, hammer, etc. Scary if someone was chasing you with it.

I think it's still for sale !

I'd rather have an Estwing hatchet or a tomahawk, maybe with a short handle. Plus a Mora if feasible.

It looks like a classic example of a Hopeful Monster. I'm sure there is a possible ideal niche for it somewhere, I'm just loathed to think where that may be or whether yet it has come to pass.

Thought experiment: Name three things the one on the right could do as well or better than the one on the left. I'll open the batting with poking.

#1 – Poking

#2 - ?

#3 -?

#2 - Convince someone you have an authentic Star Trek replica Klingon Battle Knife

I don't like it though it looks like a it would chop veggies really well in the kitchen. But if it's meant to stand in for a hatchet, why a hollow grind?

akennedy73, hola

I think it looks terrible for veggies even compared to that hatchet. The hand would be so far away from the action, and choking it up doesn't look much fun either. The grind defeats me completely. MMH have a couple of blades I'd love to try but this one looks like an art-fantasy sin binner.

My thoughts; it seems to be a hatchet wanting to be a knife. I'm guessing it would do neither job well.

You wouldn't be able to hammer with it, no poll. The points at either end of the bevel look fragile and I think they would be quite dull if the tool were used much at all.

Very sharp angles such as that one has at the bottom of the bevel make the edge difficult to sharpen with a steel or similar because the point would constantly catch on the sharpener. You'd have to carry a stone or something like that for effective sharpening.

The one on the left is mine, its great nd seems to be good both in the kitchen and in the field. The mineral mountain version looks cool but I don't know if I like the false edge and the huge point next to the handle. I dont know if you could choke up onthe mineral mountain version either.

The idea in general I think is very good though.
