multi tool for self defense

Just for clarity, are we discussing walking into a known hazardous situation (Yours is the last car in parking lot at 1:00 AM), or are we talking about an unexpected situation like getting ambushed in broad daylight.

Very good question. IMO, unless you're in, say, a combat situation or are a cop on the beat in a seriously bad 'hood (in which case, you'd have a gun and night stick - both far better weapons than a folding knife or MT), preparing for the mythical broad daylight ambush is a bit mall ninja-esque.*

For walking into a known hazardous situation such as the proverbial late-night parking lot, or when, say, your personal-safety antenna tells you you're being followed, or that some sh*tbag/s are taking more interest in you than seems reasonable, one of the big locking Victorinox models made for a great "reality-based" SD weapon. You have three options: load fist with the closed knife, load fist with the philips-head screwdriver out, or - of course - the knife blade. There have been times walking home late at night when I took great comfort in the Adventurer I held in my hand, concealed in my coat pocket, with the screwdriver open and sticking out between my middle and ring finger - sort of a poor man's Comtech Stinger, if you will. And the nice thing is, it's simple to click that screwdriver closed and no one's the wiser.

One more advantage to using a locking SAK as a SD weapon. If/when you cross the path of a cop, it's far less likely to draw unwanted interest than a single-blader like a Military or Endura or whatever. "Knife, sir? Oh this? I use it to spread peanut butter on my kids' sandwiches when we go to the park. And sometimes I have to fix the brake on our baby's stroller."

* Unless you've hired this guy to surprise ambush you from time to time as a way to keep your reflexes sharp ... :p
