Multi-tools: Best one for survival kit?

For me it's SOG for the big stuff (compound leverage, well designed implements), LM Juice for lesser (and most of) work. The Juice series are true jewels. Thinking of adding either a squirt or midnite mini-champ. Can't decide - any help appreciated.

I have a plain jane original leatherman that I pulled out of the ocean off of Caye Caulker in Belize about ten years ago, and it is still going strong.

I like the Leatherman's designs but I don't care for the company's anti-gun politics so I haven't really carried one for years. SOG is doing a really good job on multi tools. Maybe someday RAT Cutlery will venture into this part of the market:)

That would be cool..u could have a firestarter, blass breaker, magnifying lense, whistle....you could call it the RAT SAK. ;)

That's amazing because if my original Wave even sniffs salt water it starts to get rust spots on it. I just had it in it's nylon case in a backpack in the Caribbean and started noticing the spots. I love Leathermans but wasn't impressed when I saw that.

yeah, my newer wave rusts at the drop of a hat. but i keep it oiled when i can and it's lasted me on several hiking and camping trips. i hardly ever leave my house without it. wonderful tool. love the locking tools on it and with the bit kit and the extender, it makes for a phenomenal tool that barely takes up any room.

man, i dig ya'll ideas about equipment. bad thing-i start getting the wants awful bad.....

Thanks for all the input guys, I am actually looking at a couple of different models... and of course being the dumbass that I am, I managed to break my PST this morning using it as a prybar... :(

I wish I could answer this question. I like different multi-tools for different things. I'm currently lugging around a Wave, a Vic Champ, a Leatherman Juice, and a Vic Huntsman. None of them do everything I want, but together they can do anything. The multi-tool that is physically IN my "survival kit" box is the Wave.

We were issued Gerber Diesels in the Air Force, but the slide action on the pliars got instantly gummed up in about any condition (sand, dirt, water, anything locked it up) and if you can't get the pliars out you can't use any of the other features on the damn tool. It's about the most worthless thing I've ever carried. The SOGs are slick, very reliable and made from quality steel. I think the Leatherman Wave is the best bang for the buck though, best construction, design, materials and finish for the money.

its always good to keep your eye on the different stores that sell the multitools, i know kmart was getting rid of the leatherman line a few months ago and everything was almost 40-50% off. i've seen the leatherman blast a few times at target for around 20. and steepandcheap.com has the sog multis for 40% every so often.

Wow I hadn't thought of that kind of problem with the Desiel... I gave one to a friend who is a Mechanic and he gets the grub and dirty all the time and hasn't mentioned an issue at all.... I will have to ask him. I like the wave, and the surge but I have had a number of people mention to me that the exchange saw/file combo has issues with breaking (bad thing in the middle of no where). The Core also looks interesting. So far I haven't had any issues with any of my MT's that weren't user caused. (i.e. breaking the PST using it to pry).

Yeah there and I tend to keep an eye out on fleaBay a lot too for stuff. :)

Do you mean you're carrying those four around? What in 4 holsters? Might as well lug a small toolbox instead lol ;)
